This season of Dancing With the Stars is already making headlines and it hasn’t even started yet! The latest round of drama comes courtesy of seasoned veteran Karina Smirnoff.
Following the announcement that former competitor, Julianne Hough would be joining the judges’ table this season, most of the comments have been quite positive. But Karina is not so sure that Julianne is ready for the judges’ table.

There have been rumors about a mix-up at the judges table since the end of last season. First, head judge, Len Goodman, made it seem that he would be leaving the show after being there from the beginning. Then fan favorite, Maksim Chmerkovskiy made it quite clear that he was done dancing on the show and would rather sit at the judges’ table.
But after all the rumors, there wasn’t really any shuffling of judges seats, just the addition of Julianne. And Karina’s problem has nothing to do with Julianne as a person, but rather she is questioning her ability to be a impartial judge, when her brother Derek Hough is a competitor on the show.
“I think she is a great girl, I’ve known her for many years,” Smirnoff, 36, told Us Weekly. “I think that she is wonderful, gorgeous, and talented, but I don’t know if it’s ethical that she is judging while her brother is competing.”
“I may be the most fair person in the world, but if my mom is dancing and she trips, I would be like, ‘Well, I didn’t see that…'” Smirnoff continued. “That is my mother, and I will go stand by her side and support her regardless. Do I think it’s fair? No. But it is a TV show. That is what we have to remember. It’s not necessarily the Bible, it’s just a TV show.”
To each his own, but I personally would probably be a harsher judge on my sibling than on any of the other competitors. And I also think is should be pointed out that Derek won for the first time in 2007. He then went on to win seasons 10, 11, 16 and 17. Plus he was the runner-up last season. So chances are he may be near the top of the heap again — so would we really know if she was showing him favoritism??
Dancing With the Stars Season 19 premieres on Sept. 15 on ABC. The ‘stars’ will be officially announced on Thursday.
