Lala Kent is back in the news. The Vanderpump Rules star is a wannabe actress, current SUR hostess, an adult woman who drinks out of baby bottles. What an enigma! She has risen to the top of the friend food chain by publicly taking her cast mates on jets and privately losing what’s left of her dignity. BJs for PJs, y’all! Sigh, such a beacon of light for women’s rights, that one. While desperately trying to make her hashtag #givethemlalaorwhatever happen, she has been having some real-life struggles.
After the death of her father, Lala began to spiral. Arguments became excessive and drinking became problematic. It really began to seem that the only person Lala liked was Lala. Now we find that there might have been an underlying problem. No, not the one where she calls her fiance Daddy and wears a shirt emblazoned with his face. Courageously, Lala announced she is an alcoholic.
In an interview with Page Six, Lala says, “The second I admitted to myself I’m an alcoholic was like the moment that I just felt so free.” First things first, good for you girl. I have nothing but respect for people who can identify and admit when substance abuse has become an issue. No snark, no shade.
“And I’ve never been happier. I still have my struggles, but the difference is I see the light at the end of the tunnel every single day. If I have a bad day I know it’s gonna be okay tomorrow. So I wake up with the same goal every day — don’t have a drink,” Lala explained. Right on, figure your situation out, honey.
She began participating in Alcoholics Anonymous this month and reveals she is so grateful to be sober. “I swear by the program of AA,” she confessed. “I know that old-timers will hate me for talking about the program because of it being an anonymous program. But there is a generation, my generation, that’s struggling and they need to know about this program. It exists and it’s saving my life.”
Lala stated she decided to seek help when attempting to “retrain [herself] how to drink like a lady,” after her dad passed away. She admits she was not drinking throughout much of Season 7 until the cast went to Mexico for a quick vaycay. “So I had suffered the loss of my dad and was picking up the bottle every day and once we started filming I said, ‘I’m not drinking during this time.’ So a lot of the time until Mexico I was not picking up alcohol.”

I suppose grief and frustration could cause one to lose control of their emotions and oh, I don’t know, think they are above everyone else. Not drinking during filming is certainly a wise choice. Being caught with your finger in someone’s face, or screaming at a co-worker in front of paying customers are things we all go through at some point. Except they aren’t. So is Lala blaming her nasty attitude towards everyone on her father’s death, being an alcoholic, or both?
After going on a crazy bender with Daddy fiance Randall Emmett, she got so drunk she broke a hurricane-proof window in her stupor. This is the same person who said Kristen Doute was messy, mind you. But if she is getting help, more power to her. I genuinely hope she succeeds. During her passage with the 12 step program, she will undoubtedly face things that are difficult. Particularly the step that says, “Make a list of all persons we had harmed, and become willing to make amends to them all”. That line is going to be long and VPR could easily base next season around that journey.
Hopefully, Lala will get the help she needs and learn some valuable lessons. It would be nice to see her turn things around after the way she has treated certain people. Thankfully she recognized the wake-up call and is taking responsibility for her actions. Hopefully, she will move forward happily sober. And more humble.
