Hollywood loves their reboots and remakes. Get ready for a new Top Gun, Indiana Jones, Men in Black, and a live action film for every Disney cartoon ever made. And don’t forget Clueless. For the love of God, please leave that perfect film alone. As Cher would say, “Ugh, as if!”
Reality TV has also hopped onto the reboot bandwagon. One of my favorite guilty pleasures, Temptation Island, just aired a brand new season. And I’m still reeling from that shocking finale aftermath with Kaci Campbell and Evan Smith. Now MTV has joined the club, and is bringing back their past hits too.
First, it was announced that MTV has rebooted The Hills: New Beginnings. And now E has reported the next MTV shows to make a come back are Punk’d and Singled Out. For those who need a refresher, Punk’d was a hidden camera prank show hosted by Ashton Kutcher, who “targeted celebrities with elaborate pranks.” And who also annoyed celebrities and viewers alike.
Singled Out was a dating show hosted by Chris Hardwick and Jenny McCarthy that “featured a bevy of singles competing to date one main contestant.” I’d like to give an honorable mention to Carmen Electra, who took over hosting duties when Jenny left the show. The newest version of Singled Out will bring us into the current century by featuring “contestants across the sexual preference spectrum.”
But, if you think you’ll be able to watch these shows on cable like the good old days, you’d be mistaken. “Singled Out and Punk’d will return as reimaginations on Quibi, a mobile-first streaming platform.” Apparently, all the kids these days are using Quibi…riiight.
E also reported that MTV is rebooting The Real World as well. Unfortunately, the iconic opening now sounds like a commercial. “This is the next true story of seven strangers, picked to live in a house and have their hookups, screw-ups, apologies, honesty, voices, opinions, fights, tears, lives streamed exclusively on Facebook Watch.” Rolling eyes.

However, the show does sound interesting. “Set in Atlanta, Georgia, this year’s seven new roommates come from differing backgrounds and walks of life, making the show’s signature drama a sure thing.” Also, “In the first trailer for the series, fans get a peek at the drama, which features topics including virginity, sexuality, race, immigration and teen parenthood.”
I guess I’ll need to join the cool kids and start using Quibi and Facebook Watch. Or, they could just make it easy and throw in cable as an option. Just a thought.
