NeNe Leakes Admits To Struggling With Depression During Husband Gregg Leakes’ Cancer Battle

You knew this was coming. I knew this was coming. The neighbor’s dog knew this was coming. NeNe Leakes is speaking and you can guarantee it doesn’t involve the words, “I’m sorry”. It may however contain the phrase, “poor me”. After an astounding season of treating people like dirt on Real Housewives of Atlanta, it looks like damage control has been engaged. Oh goody! You might recall NeNe literally had a problem with everyone she came into contact with last year. Including Bravo production. No one escaped NeNe’s wrath, not even her husband Gregg.

Season 11 found Gregg suffering from stage III colon cancer. Because of that whole, “in sickness and in health” thing, NeNe assumed the role of caretaker. Fortunately for NeNe, Gregg’s advanced illness did not prevent her from traveling to Tokyo. Nor did she miss filming obligations due to his condition. In fact, much of Gregg’s battle revolved around NeNe’s needs. The backlash she received was notable. Co-stars didn’t like her and the fans were over her too. NeNe’s publicist must have stopped hitting the snooze button, now there could be a reason behind her course attitude. Pack your bags and grab your snacks, we’re taking a ride on the Excuse Train.

Cancer sucks for everyone involved, especially the patient. The effect of a loved one battling any disease weighs heavy on family and friends. The caretaker directly involved is not spared any personal pain. NeNe was under so much stress last season, it disabled her ability to be polite. The fallout seemed to reach a point where no one would film with her as cameras rolled on Season 12. Her return to RHOA was delayed by “contract negotiations“. But there is a reason for all of that! In an interview with HollywoodLife, NeNe shares how she, once again, was affected by Gregg’s cancer.

“It was such a hard time,” NeNe admitted. “Being a caretaker and doing something like caring for someone with cancer for the first time in my life, then to have to be the breadwinner for everything, it’s a lot. The overseer of everything in our life, it was a lot of pressure and it really did feel like depression.” Also, it’s called marriage. This is what happens when two people take vows and promise to share their lives. Not to mention, she did it twice with this man.

NeNe discussed her feelings with her physician. “I don’t really know what depression is, but I was speaking to my OBGYN and I was telling her a lot about how I felt…” NeNe’s doc suggested she may be depressed. Never experiencing the symptoms before, NeNe set about doing some research. “And so I started reading about it and learned things about myself that I saw in me. She gave me some medication and it really worked and it helped me out a lot. I don’t think I really understood how serious that was for us and how much pressure I had on me.” No doubt watching the person you love suffer is debilitating. Can you imagine the pressure Gregg was under to, you know, stay alive?

NeNe’s marriage to Gregg also hit some bumps. She publicly chided him for being grumpy and claimed he got cancer because of Karma. As she lost friends because of her attitude, she almost lost her marriage as well. In a wonderful turn of events, Gregg is now cancer free. NeNe shared,”We are doing well.” So glad to hear both are doing okay. “Gregg looks so amazing. He’s doing so good. He did a PET scan and they see no cancer in his body anywhere. That was a blessing and we’re super excited about that. Every day is a new day and every day is a step in the right direction. We’ve been able to communicate a lot better with each other,” NeNe revealed.

Will this new medicated NeNe issue apologies to people she unleashed on? Will she seek forgiveness for fat-shaming Porsha Williams? Will she show remorse for manhandling a Bravo crewmember doing his job? Negative, Ghost Rider. Recently, she posted on social media about making amends with those who have done HER wrong. Gregg’s remission and NeNe’s enlightenment should be celebrated, it still doesn’t explain her attitude from the last 4 years. One thing is for sure, no matter what, it’s all about NeNe.
