Confession: I can sit through 1oo’s of hours of “unscripted television,” but I have never once made it through an awards show. Except maybe the MTV VMAs one year while I was in college. And even then, I only made it through because I was too hung over to move from the couch where my roommates were watching.
However, I do find the People’s Choice Awards fascinating. Because the awards are voted on by the viewers, it makes for some… interesting results. For example, last year’s nominees for “Drama Movie of the Year” included Red Sparrow and A Quiet Place – both legitimate movies with plots and acting and character development. Wanna know what movie won? “Fifty Shades Freed.” That’s right, we the viewers chose soft porn over a movie starring Academy Award-winning Jennifer Lawrence and one starring America’s favorite human, Jim Halpert. America’s voting habits make me nervous.
E! Online has posted the nominees for the 2019 People’s Choice Awards. There are some good reality TV categories!
The nominees for the “The Reality Show of 2019” category include Keeping Up With the Kardashians, which won last year. Incidentally, the official name of the People’s Choice Awards is the “2019 E! People’s Choice Awards.” Keeping Up With the Kardashians is on the E! Network. That seems like a conflict of interest, right? I mean, not that anyone cares enough about the People’s Choice Awards to worry about it… I’m just saying.
Also nominated for “The Reality Show of 2019” are Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta (which I have never watched), Queer Eye (ditto), Jersey Shore: Family Vacation (isn’t most of that cast in prison for tax-related crimes? That seems like it should be an automatic DQ), and Bachelor in Paradise (if the category was “Hottest Reality TV Cast of 2019,” this would be the hands-down winner). Shows from the Bravo-verse nominated for “The Reality Show of 2019” include Real Housewives of Atlanta, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and Vanderpump Rules.
I hope Vanderpump wins – only because I would LOVE to see the reactions of the ladies of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills! They are already so bitter that Lisa Vanderpump ditched them and still gets to keep her successful spin-off and ditched them. There is not enough Botox in all of California to mask the rage-faces that would occur if VPR wins.
Competing in the category of “The Reality Star of 2019,” are Khloé Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, both of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Khloé won last year (see above re: conflict of interest). Also nominated are Jonathan Van Ness and Antoni Porowski of Queer Eye. Apparently, the People’s Choice Awards are not scared to pit castmates against each other. Maybe its because no one really cares who wins?
There are also several Bravolebrities nominated for “The Reality Star of 2019,” including Nene Leakes and Kandi Burruss from Real Housewives of Atlanta, and, in the battle of the ex-BFFs, Kyle Richards and Lisa Vanderpump from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. I hope if Lisa wins, she gets up to the mic and simply yells “GOODBYE KYLE!”

Nominated for “The Competition Show of 2019” are American Idol, RuPaul’s Drag Race, America’s Got Talent, The Masked Singer (seriously? who picks these?), The Bachelor, The Voice, and The Bachelorette. Also nominated is MTV’s The Challenge: War of the Worlds.
I’m going to take a moment to pause here and say, if you are not watching The Challenge, you need to get on it. It’s been revamped in recent years and it is so good! It’s like a mix of Bachelor in Paradise and Survivor and Vanderpump Rules. The challenges are wild (like, they are trying to leap between two moving trucks or balance on one foot 20 feet above the water while other cast members throw balls at them). Then, at night they all get drunk and hook up and fight. The cast is all crazy hot and also just crazy.
There is also a category for “The Competition Contestant of 2019.” Hannah Brown, the most recent lead of The Bachelorette, is nominated. If you don’t know, the guy she picked at the end of her season ended up being a total dirt-bag who only went on the show to further his music career. Then, when Hannah broke up with him, she asked the runner-up out on a date (on national television). Runner-up said yes, they went out, their morning after pictures were all over the internet. About 2.2 seconds later, Runner-up starts dating Gigi Hadid. So, vote for Hannah, because she really needs a win.

Also nominated are Buddy Valastro of Buddy Vs. Duff (yeah, idk who that is either), Kodi Lee of America’s Got Talent, T-Pain of The Masked Singer (again? Am I missing out on something?), Colton Underwood of The Bachelor, Tyler Oakley of The Amazing Race, and Vanessa Vanjie Mateo of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Also nominated is Tyler Cameron, Hannah’s runner-up from The Bachelorette. Don’t vote for him. Six month ago, he was just some guy trying out for a reality show. Now he’s dating the hottest person on earth. Tyler has already won 2019.
And finally, the nominees for The Nighttime Talk Show of 2019 category are The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Late Show with James Corden, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and our beloved Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
