Captain Sandy Yawn Defends Malia White As First Female Bosun In Below Deck Franchise

Recently, the Below Deck Mediterranean Season 5 trailer dropped. As expected, Captain Sandy Yawn and Hannah Ferrier are back and so is another franchise alum. Deckhand Malia White has returned and she has been promoted to bosun. This means that she is the first female bosun on any Below Deck show. That’s a pretty big deal and a great thing for the franchise and for yachting in general.

Well, some people don’t see it that way. Some fans actually criticized the show for having a female bosun. In 2020. WOW. Well, don’t worry. Captain Sandy came through in Malia’s defense.

Initially, Captain Sandy shared her excitement on Twitter, writing, “So excited to have the first female bosun in #BelowDeck Herstory!” One viewer responded, “Not excited about [Malia]; prefer Jaou or however you spell his name. But, will give her a chance to prove she’s got what it takes. Happy seas and season.” In response, Sandy promised, “She is bringing it!” Captain Sandy wrote “#girlpower” in another tweet.

In another post, she declared, “It is great for our industry!” In response to someone who posted “A female bosun, seriously,” she responded, “Yes Seriously! #BelowDeckMed #GirlPower.” Former Below Deck Med bosun Joao Franco shared his support in a tweet. He wrote, “Badass of the sea is back in action!! @CaptSandyYawn! I’m so happy Malia is the bosun too!! I’m sure she will rock it!! all the best!! #BelowDeckMed.”

On Instagram, Captain Sandy wrote, “Let’s hear it for the ladies: this charter season.” Malia addressed her return to reality TV with her own Instagram post. She began, “Yes, I’m back as Bosun! My life changed after my first season on Below Deck – I left my office job & pursued a career in yachting. I’ve grown up, learned & accomplished a lot these past few years and I’m excited to share my journey from deckhand to Bosun.”

Malia continued, “Hopefully inspiring anyone else who wants to make a change in their life! People will always come up with reasons why you don’t deserve it or why you’ll fail- prove them wrong! Your past doesn’t have to write your future.” She also made sure to include the “#girlsondeck.”
