With great power comes great responsibility. I guess with mediocre power we should at LEAST expect mediocre responsibility? That only seems fair. At the same time, whatever level of power our Bravo-lebs are charged with, their responsibility will almost always be called out by the social-media beast. Don’t hate the player, and all that.
In the new-era of reality TV, almost every story-line can be traced back to social media. This isn’t even a new concept (cough cough Jacqueline Laurita cough). Super recently, Golnesa Garachedaghi used Twitter to take down Kelly Dodd. Now she’s facing her own back-lash over a recently aired Shahs of Sunset episode.
In a previous episode fans watched GG plan an “African Jungle” themed party to welcome her new son, Elijah. GG made a point to tell her party planner that her son wouldn’t be at the party long due to the pandemic. I mean, just like most parties thrown for humans under about age four, this party isn’t for the child at all. Lets just admit it. GG said she wanted the event to be a mix of Lion King and Jungle Book. FYI: these are two completely disconnected ideas both culturally and geographically. But okay then.
In the episode GG claims, “It was so easy for me to come up with the theme because Elijah loves animals. Or maybe it’s me that loves the animals and I just want the animals.” Yea, lets go with that. I mean, we should have known this party would be a damn mess when we saw the literal popsicle stick model that the party planner displayed. Displayed proudly, I might add. BUT ANIMALS YOU GUYS!!
The actual party featured a sea of women wearing leopard, African dancers, and African drums. There was even a moment where GG’s son is literally held up to the crowd like the infamous Lion King scene. The internet responded with chaos in kind.

One person tweeted, “Ummmm…..trying to understand how this birthday party theme fits in anywhere with anything Shahs. It doesn’t.#ShahsOfSunset #CulturalAppropriation.” Another shared a clip of the hired African dancers cut with Mike Shouhed dancing in a monkey onesie and GG walking out with a head wrap. Even the Shahs editing wasn’t playing with GG on this one. The tweet read, “First GG refuses to stop wearing box braids & perpetually defends it, and now she throws an “African Jungle” theme party? I’m tired of these “bravolebrities” not being held accountable for their very problematic behavior. #ShahsofSunset.”
Another viewer called GG out saying, “GG’s party theme makes me Cringe. Being Black or African isnt a party theme #ShahsofSunset.” Someone else added, “GG could have had a lion king theme without the African dancers and outfit. #shahs #shahsofsunset.” Where is the lie though? I thought this was meant to be about *~ThE aNiMaLs~*

Other’s picked up the weird vibe saying, “Something about this party themes does not feel right.#ShahsofSunset.” While some felt affirmed in their icky reaction saying, “I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thought the theme of this child party was some bullshit. #Shahs #ShahsofSunset,” and “This “African Jungle” theme is not it #ShahsofSunset.”
And for anyone still confused, one user laid it all out saying, “It’s crazy to me how the theme is African Jungle and entertainment and attire is “African” but Ive only counted one black person amongst the guests. This is embarrassingly offensive bc GG could have done Arabian night theme #shahsofsunset #shahs”
