Lexi Wilson’s meltdown and the fact that she was allowed to continue the season has the entire Below Deck Mediterranean crew on eggshells. And even an avid viewer of reality TV who enjoys a good meltdown for personal entertainment, may find her continued presence onboard questionable. She physically attacked Mzi Dempers, and that should come with a no tolerance policy. Lloyd Spencer got a faceful of her breasts as well as a derogatory slur directed at him. Bosun Malia White changed bunks to diffuse the situation. Lexi was aggressive with each of her crew members, yet she still walks among them.
How should this physical, sexual, and verbal assault have been handled according to maritime law? Well, Captain Sandy Yawn suddenly wasn’t interested in that. She told the crew to swallow their grievances and get on with it. Chief Stew Katie Flood was the one dealing with the real fallout and felt responsible because the self-proclaimed “satan” is a member of her team. Katie was empathetic with her crew mates, and did her best to rationalize with Lexi. There had to be a way to proceed forward, given the situation.
Former Below Deck alum Kate Chastain had some words of advise for Katie. The chief stew maven has dealt with many a drama queen in her day. Girls that felt they were above the work or listening to authority.
So Kate gave statements to Us Weekly regarding the situation with Lexi. She said, “I think the mistake that Katie made, she has let Lexi know that she’s scared of her. She’s kind of walking on eggshells around Lexi. I don’t know how Lexi did it, but she has managed to act however she wants … [with] everyone tiptoeing around her bad behavior.”
Kate points out the moment when she thinks Katie exposed her fear. While Lexi was on the phone with her mother, Katie told her, “right now, I’m pissed off at you,” before walking away.
Kate advised that she would not be, “as kind or patient” with Lexi. And certainly Kate was known for her terse manner and firm hand with stews that acted up. They either were reigned in, or quit. Sometimes a person is just not in the right industry.
“I just don’t think this is for Lexi,” Kate explained, “I don’t think she’s great. Working on yachts, it’s long hours and some of it’s hard work, but what are the most difficult things about it [are] learning to live in small spaces with other humans and being socially aware and being aware of how your actions affect others for that reason.”

Lexi is clearly failing on that front. It’s a pressurized situation and Kate doesn’t think, “this is the situation best suited for Lexi.” It’s evident that the second stew is good at taking care of the guests and getting her tasks done, but some mixture of alcohol, close quarters, and Malia triggered Lexi to call Mzi “a kiss ass” before putting her hands on him.
Malia was definitely the “satan’s” target that night. Lexi did apologize the next day, but it was a weak apology and Malia said as much. The bosun previously told Us Weekly that, “I think she was kind of like, ‘Yeah, whatever. I don’t remember. I’m sorry. Like, everyone get over it. We were like, ‘How do you not remember? You were saying some, like, pretty intense stuff, you know?’ So, I don’t think it was as sincere as we wanted it to be, but I think for her, that’s the best we were going to get.”
And if you’re thinking Lexi will play nice for the rest of the season, Malia confirmed that she wasn’t “done” yet. “You’ll get to see, you know, what else happens and what we go through with Lexi,” the bosun said, “but I think what’s happened has happened with Lexi and she’s just kind of done with it and that’s fair.”
If anything, Lexi now thinks she can behave like any way she likes and get away with it. It should be an eventful season.
