Everyone knows that what we see on reality TV isn’t always 100% authentic. Still, we like to feel like it’s real. We want to be sold on the illusion. So, when we clearly see the puppet strings, it’s hard not to say something about it. This has often been the case with Netflix’s Selling Sunset throughout its five-season run, but in season 5, the show really reached new heights of soap opera theatrics. One scene, in particular, that has caught everyone’s eye is a phone call between Jason Oppenheim and a client that seemed faker than fake.
In episode seven of season 5, Jason makes a conveniently timed phone call about an offer on a property. However, as E! News reported, some fans noticed that when Jason opens his phone to talk to the client, it looks like he’s actually on his camera app.
“Not Jason Oppenheim getting up to make a call with his camera,” a fan wrote on Twitter along with a clip from the show. Another viral tweet said, “My vibe today is Jason talking to his camera pretending to call a client #SellingSunset.”
But now, Jason is trying to set the record straight. He caught enough heat this season for his short-lived relationship with Chrishell Stause. So the last thing he needs is for the internet to be harassing him about faking a phone call.
“It was not a fake phone call,” Jason recently explained to TMZ. “I don’t know that got so much light.”
“It’s not that complicated,” he said before pulling out his phone and showing how he could make a call while also having the camera app open and visible. “I know that it was a real call, so I know that this works.”
We have to give it to Jason on this one. If you’re on an iPhone, you can absolutely be chatting away on the phone and have your camera app open simultaneously. Don’t believe us? Try it yourself.
