Even if it feels like the Real Housewives of Orange County Season 17 has been exciting, it really hasn’t, and the low ratings are proof fans are being swindled out of drama. The RHOC Season 17 cast currently consists of Heather Dubrow, Shannon Beador, Gina Kirschenheiter, Emily Simpson, Jennifer Pedranti, Tamra Judge, Taylor Armstrong, and moments of Vicki Gunvalson.
Still, even the Tres Amigas are falling short this season. Fans can’t quite put their finger on what is going wrong, but all they know is they don’t like it, and the OC may be looking to shake some oranges loose after yet another disappointing season.
Mean Girl Mentality
Middle school called, and the principal wants his group of mean girls back for detention as they have escaped the eighth grade. This season has shown the ladies with some venom, and it isn’t a good look. Tamra has been going in hard on Jennifer and her relationship, and honestly, it is really, really uncomfortable to watch. You would have thought Tamra would have learned to keep her opinions to herself after the fallout between her and Vicki over Brooks Ayers.
Yet, Tamra must be a glutton for punishment because she keeps choosing to lay into the yoga instructor and making her cry during every episode. Ew Tamra, be nice! For the most part, it feels like Tamra is hitting her head against a brick wall, with many wondering why she doesn’t just let it go if her friend is happy.
All of the women are at fault for picking on Heather, and again, it hasn’t been fun to watch. Never in my entire time of watching the Real Housewives of Orange County did I think I would ever empathize with Heather, but I currently do. Heather often came across as a bit fancy. The mother of four took pride in her monogram name on everything and loved showing off her ostentatious lifestyle and knowledge of fine champagne.
But nowhere does it say that being obscenely successful means you deserve to be bullied. It has become apparent that Heather doesn’t have a single friend in the group, which is very uncool.
RHOC Lacks a Real Storyline
As I sit here writing, it has occurred to me that I genuinely can’t recall what the hell has gone on this season. I think I have been in a bubble of denial, considering all these episodes have been interesting when, in retrospect, nothing has actually happened. So far, I’ve watched the ladies go on backyard slip and slide, which honestly seemed dangerous, Shannon kinda talk about her failing relationship, and Vicki screams every time she is in a scene.
Really, the only real drama has been Jenn’s relationship and everyone ganging up on Heather. Is this one of those seasons where it is really a filler for a better one to come? I don’t know if I can hold out.
Also, is anyone else forgetting that Taylor is on the show? Every time she pops up, I have to take a second to remind myself who she is. While Taylor is an easy person to watch, she has not lived up to a meme-worthy performance at all and is a total yawn fest.
Time for a New OC
Frankly, I can’t watch another week of Shannon showing her Spanx, Emily calling out legal jargon left and right, and Vicki crying over her tequila. Could it be that RHOC is actually in an identity crisis? Since 2006, the show has taken a wrong turn somewhere and lost its way into viewer’s hearts. While I enjoy most women, something just isn’t clicking.
Shannon’s recent DUI arrest highlights some of the real-life issues these women are going through. While no one should be exploited, it would be nice to see the women as real people instead of ladies who lunch. After a long 16 years, it may finally be time for the women of the OC to hand their oranges in favor of some riper fruit, because fans are starting to sour.
