Welcome to Plathville fans just learned that Olivia Plath and Ethan Plath have decided to go their separate ways, and frankly, the information doesn’t come as a surprise. Olivia was a free spirit who wanted to run into life experiences head first without a helmet, while Ethan was a bump on the log, a total drag. Honestly, good riddance to the toxic relationship!
For four seasons, the couple, who married at 18, struggled with Plath family pressure, drinking soda pop, and figuring out whether there was enough room for Jesus in their relationship. It was clear that both were struggling within their marriage, and it seemed the weight of the union finally broke them. I do not doubt that Kim Plath is jumping for joy that her firstborn son is free from the “devil.” Her words, not mine.
They Had Nothing in Common
On the most recent episode of Welcome To Plathville, Ethan and Olivia’s differences were once again showcased. During a confession, Ethan made it very clear that he and his soon-to-be ex-wife were on completely different pages when it came to politics, children, and morals.
Ethan still wanted to hold onto some control while Olivia chomped at the bit to run free. In this week’s episode, Olivia noted, “I’ve changed a lot since I got married, and I think that’s okay. I have doubts sometimes, but I also think that I’m capable of being in a relationship with someone who believes different than me. I think that’s something that I ask Ethan all the time, is if he’s capable of it.”
The couple decided to live in a different place each year, including Tampa and Minnesota. Tampa was Olivia’s haven as it was fun and bustling with people. Minnesota, however, was cold and remote, very much an interpretation of Ethan, who openly admitted he has never been a people person. Ethan loved working on his old cars that didn’t talk back to him, while Olivia traveled, snapping photos of happy couples. The irony is tragic.
Neither Family Approved of the Marriage
Kim and Barry Plath made it fairly obvious that they never approved of Olivia once they realized she was a lousy role model. I mean, anyone who embraced sugar, TV, and adventure is clearly a heathen! Lock up your kids! Kim often mentioned Olivia’s “evil spirits,” and eventually, the daughter-in-law was banned from the family home. Even Moriah Plath and Micah Plath ended up turning on Olivia, claiming she was a drama queen.
Olivia’s sister, Lydia Grace, shared in her confessional that she didn’t think Ethan was good enough for Olivia. Even though both TLC stars were grew up under similar circumstances, Olivia was willing to evolve, while Ethan just wanted to keep her under his thumb. Lydia, not so innocently, asked her younger sister, “What if you meet somebody and you were a different person when you met them, but you’ve completely changed, and you’re kind of going in opposite directions, but you’re together with them?”
Ethan and Olivia Were Far Too Young To Marry
Few 18 and 20-year-olds are equipped for marriage, as they have not gained enough life experience. Initially, Olivia and Ethan were rarely allowed to speak on the phone and relied on handwritten letters as their only form of communication. During an earlier Welcome to Plathville season, both admitted that they chose to get married just so they could actually hang out!
It seems their 2021 separation was just the appetizer for what will undoubtedly be an interesting divorce. Ethan noted in his breakup announcement post that “It just didn’t work between us, though Lord knows we both gave it all we had. It seemed we were constantly pulling each other in opposite directions in life with different goals.”
In an ominous couch confessional, Ethan’s last word in the new episode hinted at an inevitable breakdown as he said, “I am not tolerant of some of the beliefs you have, and you are not tolerant of some of the beliefs I have. Going along to get along—that’s a recipe for a miserable life. I don’t want that.”
