During Leah McSweeney’s two-season run on Real Housewives of New York City, she was very open about her decade-long sobriety and subsequent relapse. Although her Housewives introduction saw her getting wild and wasted, her sophomore season introduced us to a more subdued and sober Leah. Then, when she joined the cast for Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip, Leah was fully committed to a sober lifestyle. Apparently, not everyone agreed with that decision.
On RHUGT, Leah clashed with her castmates because of their indifference towards her sobriety. And it turns out, professional drinker and Real Housewives of Miami star, Marysol Patton was one of the least supportive people for Leah – even before the cameras started rolling. The truth finally came to the surface thanks to Vanity Fair’s deep dive into Bravo and the Housewives.
A RHUGT text from Marysol that shouldn’t have been sent
Before heading to Thailand, Leah said she got a text from Marysol. It started supportive but ended up being majorly offensive. Marysol wrote, “I support your sobriety obviously, and I could never do what you do because I don’t have your will power, and I marvel at what you have done!!”
Then, the text took a wild turn. Marysol continued, “But on that note I wish you were still drinking. That’s all.”
Can you imagine sending that text to a sober person? With that context, it starts to make sense why Leah was on edge when she arrived in Thailand and quickly took offense when other Housewives commented on her sobriety. And, if you’re reading this and finding yourself questioning Leah’s credibility, please note that Marysol fully admitted to sending this pre-RHUGT text.
Marysol told the outlet, “Yes, I sent the text message. There was a collective memory of the girl running around throwing tiki torches and skinny dipping, and that is who I was hoping to go on vacation with.”
In the report, Leah explained how difficult it was for her to relapse before RHONY Season 12. After nearly 10 years of sobriety, it was a bigger deal than she let on. Then, in the next season, her grandmother died. The stress of it all led her into a major depressive episode. Leah decided to come back to the Housewives franchise for RHUGT, only to be greeted by Marysol trying to get her back to drinking. What a mess.
You can relive Marysol and Leah’s season of Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip on Peacock.
