Kody Brown of Sister Wives is one of the most diabolical reality TV stars on air today. While the father of 18 doesn’t run with the big dogs on Bravo, he has become a major villain in his own right after proving over and over again that he is manipulating when it comes to the women of his life and his older children. The Wyoming native always tries to have a cheery smile. However, behind the Cheshire cat grin, Kody is always plotting how to have the best life with his rules.
Kody Claimed To Have Made No Money From Sister Wives
During Season 3 in 2011, Janelle Brown let the cat out of the bag while interviewing with Kody on CNN. For multiple seasons, the proud polygamist had claimed he hadn’t made a dime from TLC, which fans knew was a lie. However, Janelle finally confirmed it. When asked how the family made their money, Kody shared that he was a salesman, claiming all four wives worked too. When asked if they were paid by TLC, Kody quickly responded, saying they were paid “nothing.” Janelle quickly contradicted her husband’s statement, claiming that they were, in fact, compensated by TLC.
Now, when they first fled Utah, part of the investigation by the state was about the Browns making money by promoting an illegal practice—filming the TLC show. Kody is trying to cover his steps because he knows he is being investigated, so he chooses to lie. During the same interview, Kody also admitted that he doesn’t financially take care of his wives, claiming he just wanted to marry them for credibility.
The Move to Las Vegas Was Under False Pretenses
One of the big talking points of Sister Wives during the early years was that Kody and his family were kicked out of Utah for being under investigation by the Sheriff. Kody and his four wives, Meri Brown, Christine Brown, Janelle, and Robyn Brown, all explained they feared for their husband’s life as he could be hauled off to jail at any time for having more than one spouse. When asked about the investigation, Kody shared some surprising news during the CNN interview.
“We know exactly what was written in the papers,” he said, “and we know nothing else other than that. You’d have to talk to a lawyer and understand their speculations on it to understand more than we understand.” Meri, his first wife, also said, “All we know about the investigation is stuff we’ve read about in the papers. We’ve never been contacted directly.”
The news was a bombshell. Fans thought they moved to Las Vegas for religious freedom. However, it turned out Kody just wanted a change of scenery. Janelle confirmed the news, noting, “First off, Kody has been talking about moving to Nevada for years. He has always loved it. We have all the factors—surely the investigation is one of the factors. We also talked about like the business opportunities, the housing, the real estate opportunities.”
Kody’s COVID-19 Rules
Kody has gotten plenty of heat for how he handled the worldwide pandemic. He left most of his family members to fry while he hunkered down with his fourth and favorite wife, Robyn. Kody also gave numerous conflicting explanations for his strange COVID-19 rules. First, Kody said his rules were for the nanny, then claimed he got them from his doctor, but he also checked with the nanny to see which rules she was following. The misinformation was atrocious and only went to prove Kody was flying by the seem of his pants, not really caring who he isolated.
Kody was found to have said all three statements during different confessionals. It was a shame that none of his four wives ever called him out. The only thing Kody didn’t trip up on was claiming that Robyn never made the rules despite getting all the blame.
Kody Lied About Custody Laws
During his divorce from Christine, Kody couldn’t help himself when it came to trying to hold on to some control. Kody proved he wasn’t above playing dirty when it came to his former wife trying to move his daughter Truely Brown back to Utah. Kody claimed that he and Christine needed to “have to actually have a child custody agreement in place or the state takes her, essentially becomes the owner of her.” But Christine smelled a rat, asking, “Oh seriously?”
In his confessional, Kody admitted he made up the lie in order to force Christine’s hand. “So I got to this child custody thing,” Kody said. “I just started getting creative about it. I just don’t know what to do. Christine’s like, ‘Why do we need to do this?’ And I’m like, ‘Because the rulebook says?’ I don’t know why we need to do this. There is this thing in the man-o-sphere where it says, ‘If you’re getting divorced, you’re going to get screwed, bro.'”
