When Candiace Dillard Bassett joined The Real Housewives of Potomac, she also brought along all of the baggage from her rocky relationship with her mom, Dorothy Watts.
Dorothy is one of the few people on RHOP who can talk some sense into Candiace. However, the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree, and they both tend to cross boundaries during disagreements. Remember when Candiace said her mom slapped her in the face with a purse?
In the latest episode of Real Housewives of Potomac, Candiace’s mom made an appearance. She visited her daughter for a glass of wine and a conversation in the backyard. Luckily, there were no purses, insults, or arguments. In fact, this might have been the least shady appearance we’ve ever had from Dorothy. So, Candiace shared some insight on the current status of the relationship with her mother. It seems like things are better than ever.
Candiace and mom Dorothy: Where do they stand?
From running a hair company to modeling and singing, we’ve seen Candiace try to do a little bit of everything to varying results. Right now, music is her primary focus, and on RHOP, she opened up to her mom about touring and the financial strain it put on her.
“Just last year, it was a promotional tour, which means I spent so much money the first go-round to get exposure, to get people to see me. And so this go-round, I’m getting more cities, so the promotional tour worked, it’s just [that] I cannot spend that much money again,” Candiace explained.
Although touring has been a financial burden for Candiace, she surprisingly said that her music career has helped smooth the relationship with her mother.
“My mom seeing me as an artist has, perhaps, helped her to grow a newfound respect for me, and it’s been really nice,” Candiace shared.
“I mean, we still get to tussling every now and then, but, it’s less,” she joked. “Thank you, Jesus, for less.”
Although Candiace and Dorothy are tussling less, that doesn’t mean that Dorothy has completely traded in her shady ways. It just runs in the family. In Episode 4, Dorothy delivered some light shade toward Candiace’s husband, Chris Bassett, and his current job situation.
Dorothy asked, “What is Chris working on right now?”
Visibly annoyed, Candiace explained that Chris was making money by hosting virtual cooking classes and launching a line of seasoning salts. Dorothy wasn’t impressed. Moms are rarely impressed, but at least she’s no longer paying the bills and hitting her daughter with her purse. That’s growth!
