Sister Wives stars Kody Brown and Robyn Brown are still in shock. After their polygamous family unraveled within 14 months, they’re still trying to make sense of their new lives.
Three of Kody’s four wives, Christine Brown, Janelle Brown, and Meri Brown, called it quits. Robyn is the only remaining wife. Though they were “spiritually” married in 2010, they’ve been legally wed since 2014 and have five children (three from a previous marriage).
“Kody has been going through … a lot of frustration and anger and hurt and betrayal,” Robyn told PEOPLE. “I’m going through my own emotions about all of it as well … It’s been really hard on our relationship because … when you’re going through a divorce, you start questioning yourself.” What divorce? None of the four people involved were legally married.
In a dark place
The loss of his plural family has deeply affected Kody. “He’s just been in such a dark place,” Robyn shared. She claimed he even tried to “sabotage” his relationship with her.
For his part, Kody said he and Robyn have been in a “strange space” since Christine, Janelle, and Meri left. “Moving forward is still one of those things,” said the father of 18, “where you go through a divorce, you almost feel like God doesn’t exist … You’re so angry, so bitter.”
“You need to let some sunshine back in,” he acknowledged. “That’s the thing. I think we’re just in a transitionary point where I am letting sunshine back in.”
Kody tries to “punish” himself
On the December 10 Sister Wives: One on One special, Robyn explained to host Sukanya Krishnan that Kody’s been trying to “sabotage” their relationship and that she has to “stop him all the time.”
“He picks fights with me [over] dumb things,” she said, wiping away invisible tears. Has anybody else noticed that when Sobbin’ “cries,” we never see any real tears? Her mouth does that upside down thing, she wipes her eyes, and her voice quavers, but I never see any actual moisture. It’s weird.
“We’re in different places,” she sniffled. “We’re in different places about the bomb that went off on our family … I’m in a major place of mourning, and he’s angry.”
Kody admitted to purposely trying to hurt his marriage to Robyn “out of the frustration and anger.” He’s also looked for ways to “punish” himself. He even thought of leaving Robyn as a way to accomplish that punishment.
“A lot of dark winds were going through me,” he confessed. “A lot of devil, a lot of temptation, which would be destructive [to] my relationship with Robyn. So I dealt with a lot of anger, and she would get frustrated. My anger was a turn-off. It was scary.”
But hasn’t Kody always been angry? To says it’s a “turn-off” is an understatement. I couldn’t be happier for Meri, Janelle and Christine. They are free at last.
