Todd and Julie Chrisley are asking, believing, and now receiving some money. The Chrisley Knows Best alums are currently in jail, but this is a speck of light at the end of the tunnel known as their prison terms.
Both Chrisley parents are paying their dues after being convicted of tax evasion and bank fraud – which they deny. While Todd and Julie have had their sentences reduced, they are also expected to verbally appeal the ruling in April. Now they managed to win a large financial settlement from behind bars. People has the scoop.
Winning from jail
Todd and Julie’s lawyer has certainly enjoyed speaking to the media amid their incarceration. Now he has something new to say, so good for him! While sitting in prison and thinking about the old days, Todd and Julie somehow won in court.
This week their attorney revealed the now disgraced couple are due to get $1 million from the state of Georgia. This would be to conclude a federal lawsuit from 2019 with Joshua Waites, a very thirsty former Director of Special Investigations from Georgia’s Department of Revenue.
“We have been saying for months that the criminal case against the Chrisleys was highly unusual and had real problems. This settlement is an encouraging sign,” the Chrisley counsel explained.
He continued, “It’s nearly unprecedented for one arm of the government to pay money to defendants when another arm is fighting to keep them in jail.” While I’m not proficient on tax evasion and fraud, it does seem unusual for convicted criminals to win a financial reward after, you know the whole fraud thing.
Todd and Julie cleared of tax evasion
Todd and Julie were cleared of their tax evasion charge and went after Joshua Waites because he “specifically targeted” them. He also may or may not have been involved with the couple’s estranged daughter, Lindsie Chrisley.
The legal docs state Mr. Waites was “a shocking example of how an out-of-control public servant can abuse his office and violate the rights of innocent citizens for reasons that have more to do with securing publicity and money for his office than with enforcing the law.” Oh dear.
In January 2023, T and J commenced serving their individual prison terms. Todd is due to get out in 2033 and Julie will once again be a free woman in 2028. That is, unless their oral appeal is successful and they are released from jail. Never say never!
