Newlyweds Hayley Erbert and Derek Hough are especially grateful to be facing the New Year together.
After she became “disoriented” following a performance of their Symphony of Dance tour on December 7, Derek rushed Hayley to the hospital. Doctors determined that she had a cranial hematoma, resulting from a burst blood vessel in her brain. She underwent emergency surgery and is now doing well.
“They spent the holiday feeling overwhelmed with gratitude that the surgery was a success and Hayley is on the mend,” an insider says. The same source added that the experience has “given them a new appreciation for their life together.” Us Weekly has the details.
A second surgery
On December 20, the Dancing with the Stars judge gave fans an update on his wife’s condition and asked for positive thoughts as she faced a second procedure. “She is going in for surgery this morning to replace a large portion of her skull that was removed during her Craniectomy,” he explained. “Please keep her in your prayers.”
The following day he confirmed that Hayley’s second surgery was “successfully completed as planned.” He thanked everyone for all of their loving support.
After thanking Hayley’s medical team for saving her life, Derek added, “We are profoundly touched by the outpouring of support … Your thoughts, prayers, and positive energy have been a source of strength and comfort for us during this challenging time.”
“We are filled with hope … for the future, knowing [Hayley] is on the path to a full recovery,” Derek concluded.
“The greatest gift of all”
On Christmas Day, Hayley posted a loving tribute to her husband, while expressing her gratitude for her health. “Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas!” she wrote in her Instagram post. “Cherishing the greatest gift of all. The precious gift of life and the love we share.”
On January 7, the professional dancer/choreographer dedicated his Creative Arts Emmy award for Outstanding Choreography for Variety or Reality Programming to his wife.
“Exactly one month ago,” he said, “I was in the hospital. [That experience] was a life-changing moment that reminded me to really cherish and savor every moment.”
Calling the “strength and courage” of his “beautiful wife” during her health scare “unbelievable,” Derek added, “You inspired me every day.”
In response, Hayley posted a loving tribute to her husband the next day. “Congratulations to the love of my life for his 4th Emmy win!” she wrote, adding that it was a great welcome home following “such an unfathomable month.”
