New information has been revealed about Monica Garcia’s previous marriage and a lot of things are making sense now. The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star is currently between a rock and a hard place, but the truth is, she’s been there before.
Fans of the show know Monica’s marriage ended in divorce. They also know about the affair that led to her being bounced from the Mormon church. But it wasn’t infidelity that sparked divorce proceedings. The U.S. Sun has the unsavory details.
The ex couldn’t keep his hands to himself
Monica was married to Mike Fowler and divorced after four years (the first time). Further, a big topic of convo on RHOSLC was Monica’s affair and being excommunicated from the church. What Monica didn’t discuss was the domestic violence she experienced at home.
In 2021, police records show an “incident” went down at Mike and Monica’s home. At 11:30 PM on March 5th of that year, Mon called the police and reported her husband had “hit her.” The report said, “Dispatch advised that the complainant stated that her husband had hit her and now she was hiding in a bedroom.”
Per the report, “Dispatch stated that they could hear the female yelling for him to get away from her.” Before the fight started, Monica and Mike had been out to eat and were “arguing about some of the people that she had been associating with.”
When they got back to their house, “the argument got worse and that’s when he [Mike] slapped her across the face.” As Monica went to call 911, Mike apparently pleaded with her not to report the hit.
She continued making the call and “locked herself into a back room.” Then Mike took her phone so she called police via her Apple Watch. Once law enforcement arrived, Monica left the locked room. Mon advised authorities they were “arguing about her friends.”
Monica admits to being afraid
The report noted, “she was afraid of Michael and what he would do if she disobeyed him.” At the time, all of the kids were home except for one. Unfortunately, the 15-year-old woke up during the dispute and “heard the assault and the arguing between Monica and Michael.”
The police arrested Mike after listening to both sides and he was slapped with quite a few charges. They include: DVAS (domestic violence assault), DVPC (domestic violence in presence of child) and ELDV (interruption of a communication device).
He did plead guilty to assault and was consequently sentenced to one year of probation and fines up to $1070.
Additionally, Mike had to attend parenting classes, counseling sessions, and 16 weeks of DV anger management classes. Two other charges were dismissed in March 2021. And now we know why Mike moved across the country when the second divorce was final.
Regardless of what you might think of Monica, no one deserves to be the victim of domestic violence. No child should ever experience the trauma of their parents physically fighting.
