Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fans saw the tension between Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky become rather awkward on the January 17 episode. Of course, things were already tense between the two given Mauricio’s recent absence at Kyle’s recent event.
What hurt more than anything was that the event wasn’t just a typical Housewife party. It was “Kyle’s Celebration of Life,” hosted with the National Alliance on Mental Health. The occasion was essentially a memorial for Kyle’s friend Lorena Shea who took her own life.
The stated reason for Mauricio’s absence was travel related to work, which wasn’t a great excuse given the event’s importance. Well, the tension only grew worse as Mauricio was then able to attend Dorit Kemsley’s “Homeless Not Toothless” gala.
Kyle drops a surprise bomb on Mauricio
On the January 17 episode of RHOBH, fans saw Kyle reflect on Mauricio’s absence at the memorial. In a confessional, she explained, “Would it had meant something to me if all of a sudden he had shown up at the event for Lorene? Of course it would have. You know, he was close to her, also.”
Mauricio tried to ask how the memorial had gone before Kyle informed him that she’d be traveling in the next few weeks. “It’s a little taste of his own medicine, to be honest,” she told cameras, “because there are many times where all of a sudden he’s like, ‘Oh, I’m off to Portugal.’ ‘I’m leaving for Chicago.’ I don’t really get a heads up, so … oops?”
The drive to Dorit’s event was awkward. When the couple arrived, the awkwardness didn’t stop. As Kyle pointed out, “Every time I go to one of these events, there’s a lot of whispering and watching Mauricio and me … They’re analyzing every move or hand gesture. It’s very weird.”
As far as Mauricio’s choice to attend Dorit’s gala, even Sutton Stracke noted how strange that was. In her confessional, she said, “Mauricio, you can come to the Homeless Not Toothless event, but you can’t come to the Celebration of Life event for your wife? That’s messed up!”
