It’s a cultural trend to speak of fur babies as “children of divorce” as Tom Schwartz did in an Instagram message post-split from Katie Maloney. As more and more couples, or former couples in this case, opt for pets over children, it seems the trend will continue.
So when asked for an update on their relationship post-divorce, it made sense that Tom and Katie would both mention their dogs, Butter and Gordo.

The Vanderpump Rules cast members spoke on the topic during the Season 11 premiere party earlier this month. They’ve worked to maintain a cordial relationship for the sake of their dogs. Tom and Katie share custody of Butter and Gordo.
“We have a great balance,” Tom told People of how he and Katie manage splitting time between them for their “joint custody” of the pets. However, the Schwartz & Sandy’s co-owner admitted, “[It] can get ugly.”
“I feel like we’ve been through some rough moments in our post-divorce relationship,” he added. “I feel like we always handle it with decorum … And I’m so happy.”
Vanderpump Rules fans will recall how the former couple tried to maintain a friendship in Season 10. But Tom’s pursuing of Rachel Leviss severed the cordiality. Katie did not want her ex-husband dating within the friend group, it hit too close to home. So when he went for Rachel anyway, the Something About Her co-owner was livid. Though all that drama paled in comparison to Rachel’s fling with Tom Sandoval. Plus, Rachel’s said it was a set-up.
Katie and Tom were already coupled when they starred as original cast members of Vanderpump Rules. They filmed their 2016 wedding for the show, yet a beaurocratic glitch made the ceremony non-legally binding. There was a second, legally binding wedding in 2019. Sadly, the duo called in quits in early 2022.
Both parties have waded into the dating pool, but have not announced any serious commitments since their separation.
