Sister Wives patriarch Kody Brown just wants to move forward in his relationships with his three ex-wives.
“I’ve got to find that space of grace and love for myself,” Kody says. He admits he’s working to “forgive” himself for “being angry about what has happened.” He’s ready to “move on.”
“It’s a journey [both inward and outward],” he explains of the relationships with Meri Brown, Janelle Brown, and Christine Brown. “You have to express forgiveness, … understanding, and hope that at the end [of] us as a family … we [can still have] a friendship and a loving … relationship with each other … Because we’re bound forever through our kids.” Kody shares 13 children with his three exes.
Sister Wives’ Kody’s hopeful friendship could happen
After three of his four wives left him within a 14-month period, Kody admits the “experience has been painful.” He also considers it all a “process” to reach more solid ground with his family.
“Really, I just look forward to a future of a lot of forgiving and a lot of … just more understanding,” he tells People.
“It destroys your confidence when you go through a divorce or a family breakup,” Kody says. (Also, water is wet, and the sun is really bright.) But after some time has passed, the father of 18 feels like his “confidence is coming back.”
While Kody is hopeful of repairing his relationships with Meri, Janelle, and Christine, he’s still struggling with the changes the loss of her sister wives has made to his remaining marriage with Robyn Brown, his only legal wife.
“We are not recovering from this,” he confesses. “It’s not clinical depression, but we’ve been a bit depressed [after what they went through] … We’ve been through a very hard experience, and our reaction to it has changed us. We are not the same.”
Sabotaging his relationship with Robyn
Kody also admits to sabotaging his and Robyn’s relationship “out of frustration and anger.”
“I thought of myself leaving Robyn and having another lover,” he said during the Sister Wives: One-on-One special. He imagined “looking at this lover and going, ‘I don’t love you. I’m in love with another woman. I’m in love with a woman that I left because I was too much a piece of sh*t to manage the relationship.’ … It was just anger, and I’m embarrassed.”
For her part, Robyn is just sad and disappointed. ““There is a weird feeling of, ‘This was the agreement: to be together and end up together and always be a family.’ And I just feel like people left,” Sobbin’ explained. Yup, that’s pretty much what happened. The other wives got tired of playing second fiddle to you and decided they deserved better.
Robyn says that she feels “kind of abandoned.” It’s ironic, since that’s the way Meri, Janelle, and Christine felt for years, ever since Kody married Robyn and decided she was his favorite wife.
I’m glad to hear that Kody is trying to let go of his anger and move toward forgiveness and peace with his exes. It’s what’s best for his family and his relationships with his children. I hope he gets there eventually.
