The Ambassador of Surry County has some big plans. If you’ve been following Karen Huger’s journey on The Real Housewives of Potomac, then you know that her family farm is extremely important to her legacy. The farm has been in her family for over 100 years, and she wants to be a part of its future.
On her spinoff, Karen’s Grande Dame Reunion, she brought the cameras to Surry County, and we got to see her family discuss the next steps for the family property. More recently, Karen revealed that she finally secured a piece of it, and she bought her grandmother’s home. On RHOP Season 8, Episode 7, she revealed the big plans for her newly acquired property.
Karen’s piece of the pie
In Season 8, Karen explained that securing part of the property was no easy feat. Her aunt Val currently runs the family farm, and she felt unsure about offering up a piece of it to Karen. However, the Grande Dame finally got an opportunity to buy into the farm.
Karen quipped in a confessional, “It took me almost a year to get my aunt Val to agree to sell me a piece of her land — praise God!”
Now that Karen owns her grandmother’s house, she shared her plans for bringing it into the future. She wants to transform it into a tourist destination. We’ll see her take some baby steps towards that in the remaining episodes of Season 8.
Karen shared, “My grandmother’s home is 104 years old. It certainly is historical, it certainly is a warm and loving place; so I am turning that into an experience, which is a mini resort for tourism in Surry County, Virginia.”
The Surry County Experience
So, what exactly happens at a mini resort for tourism in Surry County? That’s not completely clear, but we can imagine there will be a lot of three-wick candles and champagne. As long as the Grande Dame is involved, we’re sold. But before you book your flight to Virginia, keep in mind, this isn’t going to be completed overnight. In Bravo’s sneak peek from RHOP Season 8, Episode 11, Karen shared a timeline for the project.
“I see 18 months to two years to get it going,” Karen explained. “The first thing I have to do is find out whether the structure is sound enough for me to renovate, and if it’s not, we’ll talk about the new structure that I’m going to erect.”
With that timeline, it sounds like Karen has secured a storyline through Season 10 of RHOP, at least. Meanwhile, Karen said that she’s hopeful that her story of renovating her family’s property will help encourage other Black Americans to follow suit.
“I’m not the only Black woman or Black family member that owns a plantation and farm,” Karen shared. “And I hope that when they see it it’s duplicated around the U.S.”
New episodes of The Real Housewives of Potomac air Sunday nights on Bravo at 8/7c.
