New details have emerged in the long and drawn-out federal court case involving Dina Manzo and her ex-husband, Tommy Manzo. The former Real Housewives of New Jersey star has been dealing with this nightmare court case for years. Now, Tommy wants his charges dropped.
Back in 2020, the feds indicted Tommy for supposedly hiring a Lucchese crime family member to beat up Dina’s then-boyfriend, David Cantin. The crime itself happened in 2015 in front of a New Jersey strip mall. Now, according to the New York Post, Tommy’s lawyers are fighting to dismiss the case.
The courts are moving too slowly for Tommy
Tommy’s accomplice, John Perna, has already served time in prison for his role in the alleged mafia beatdown. However, Tommy’s case has been in federal court limbo for months. According to his lawyers, the federal court system has taken too long to make progress in the case. Therefore, they want the whole thing dismissed.
“The last day that Mr. Manzo could have been brought to trial on the Indictment in compliance with the [law] was December 10, 2022,” his lawyers wrote.
His lawyers cite the Speedy Trial Act of 1974. This law basically imposes time limits for each phase in a federal court trial. His lawyers say this has been violated.
His legal team continued, “There is no question that there has been a violation of the [Speedy Trial Act] in this case … the indictment against Mr. Manzo must be dismissed.”
Of course, this is just one of Tommy’s court cases. In a separate case, Tommy and another accomplice were accused of assaulting David and Dina in addition to burglarizing their home in 2017. According to the outlet, that case is frozen until the federal case gets resolved. So, even if the feds drop the charges for the 2015 beatdown, there’s still more trouble looming in the future for Tommy.
