We all tune into Queer Eye on Netflix for the softhearted, kindhearted vibes. But, allegedly, the environment behind the scenes was the polar opposite. We’ve been following rumors of infighting among the Fab Five, but the latest accusations point to Jonathan Van Ness being a nightmare on set. It sounds like they made Ellen DeGeneres seem like a saint.
Rolling Stone published the bombshell exposé right on the heels of the news that Jeremiah Brent would be replacing Bobby Berk for Season 9 of the Emmy-winning reality show. Bobby previously hinted that there was a little bit of shade behind his exit. This new article detailed just how the Fab Five started falling apart, and how JVN was supposedly at the center of it.
Does JVN have a problem with their temper?
According to sources, the Fab Five crew were never exactly the picture-perfect quintet that we saw on TV. Realistically, they were just five dudes who got strung together by a media machine. In essence, no different than a girl group on The X Factor. Behind the scenes, they were all endeavoring to be the Fab Five’s #1.
Ultimately, we saw JVN become the breakout of the group with their over-the-top persona and overdose of positivity. Despite what we saw on TV, a huge ego allegedly was built with that fame. Sources close to the production claimed that JVN would have weekly fits of rage. The behavior was so bad that employers were afraid to be around them.
“[There’s] a real emotion of fear around them when they get angry,” a source close to the production claimed.
Apparently, when JVN got mad on set, they’d almost always start yelling. One source described it as a cartoonish level of anger. The only positive thing that they could say bout Jonathan was that they were kind to the makeover recipients. They might have been raging behind the scenes, but the makeover recipients still had a positive experience.
Rage issues, and icing out Bobby
The report also discussed how JVN’s bad behavior spilled over into the rest of the group’s dynamic. For example, an insider claimed that Tan France started a secret campaign to get Bobby replaced by Jeremiah. Although Bobby did leave the show on his own accord, fans were already suspicious of tension between the two. This new exposé seemed to confirm it, and shed more light on the “mean girl” antics among the group, including JVN’s diva-like behavior.
“[They] didn’t want to ever share the spotlight with anyone,” a source claimed. “There were times when we couldn’t even shoot scenes with certain members of the Fab Five together because it got so bad.”
According to folks close to the Queer Eye production, JVN’s attitude with the cast behind the scenes was hypocritical from what we saw on the show. They said that Jonathan does have the compassion to be warm, but they also have a penchant for yelling. Expect a carefully-crafted PR apology soon.
Season 9 of Queer Eye is expected to premiere sometime this year, and Seasons 1-8 are streaming on Netflix.
