Real Housewives of New Jersey star Dolores Catania hopes to remove some stigma from people taking Ozempic for weight loss.
On May 2, Dolores was a guest on Sherri Shepherd’s eponymous talk show, Sherri. She opened up about taking Ozempic, an FDA-approved prescription medication for people with type 2 diabetes. The medication works in the brain, helping people to feel full so they don’t eat more than they should. During the past year, the drug has become very popular as a weight loss tool, especially among those in the entertainment industry. Sherri mentioned that many celebrities are taking the medication on the down-low.
“I don’t know why,” Dolores said, “because there’s no shame in it. If a doctor gives it to you, if you’re doing things right, you’re becoming healthier by losing weight. It’s a bunch of great things that come along with this.”
“It shuts off that food noise”
Claiming that she’s back to her “high school weight,” Dolores added, “I’m not parting with it, and I’m gonna be honest because it’s right.”
Her friend and RHONJ co-star Margaret Josephs shared that she began taking Ozempic when she had trouble with her weight following menopause. “After menopause, it’s so hard to lose weight,” she explained. “And then you’re shamed for it if you’re heavy.”
“It shuts off that food noise, my blood work is great,” she continued. “[Before Ozempic] I couldn’t do anything. It doesn’t matter if I was eating right or exercising. So I don’t know why there’s any shame in it if it’s helpful to people.”
“I just think people have been so shamed by it,” Dolo added. “We have to be honest with the people who watch the show,” she stressed, “because we know what we signed up for.” Despite their openness, she acceded that people have a right to their privacy if that’s what they want.
Margaret brought up that she doesn’t want anyone to see her or Dolores’ weight loss on TV and feel bad about themselves for being heavy.
“This is not natural,” she said. “It takes a village. No one wakes up like this, and no one on social media wakes up like that.” Margaret was referring to the Glam Teams that assist the Housewives with their hair, makeup, and fashion choices at times.
Season 14 of RHONJ premiered Sunday, May 5. And I’m calling my doctor tomorrow.
The Real Housewives of New Jersey airs on Sundays at 8/7c on Bravo.
