Golden Bachelorette Joan Vassos Reveals 1985 Movie Role

Thanks to her appearance as a background actor in 1985’s St. Elmo’s Fire, Golden Bachelorette star Joan Vassos experienced her very own “Brat Pack” moment.

“I love Rob Lowe. I think he’s so freaking handsome,” Joan gushed. “And he’s funny, and he’s a great actor … I was actually an extra in a movie that he was in, so I met him in person. I’ve loved him since I was 21 years old. I was in St. Elmo’s Fire. You can see me, like, in a split second as an extra.”

If you’re paying attention, you can see Joan in a scene that takes place 52 minutes into the film. Joan rides past a fraternity house on a bicycle as Rob’s character, Billy Hicks, sits out front.

Following the popularity of The Golden Bachelor starring Gerry Turner, Joan was selected as the first-ever Golden Bachelorette. During Gerry’s season, Joan had to leave early to care for her daughter, who had recently given birth. Being the Golden Bachelorette gives Joan another chance at finding love.

Joan lost her late husband to pancreatic cancer at the age of 59 in 2021. As she prepared to meet her Golden suitors, Joan revealed that in addition to Rob Lowe, she also has a crush on actor Kevin Costner.

“I love Kevin Costner. Since [TV show] Yellowstone, I just think he is the rugged, sexy guy,” she told Us Weekly. “Kind of opposite of Rob Lowe, who’s kind of polished. He is so darn handsome.”

Aside from being handsome, Joan is hoping to meet a “family man” (aka a “gentleman”) who knows how to treat a lady. “My father was the ultimate gentleman,” she said. “He opened doors, carried everything, hopped up when a woman walked in the room, was always polite, never cussed. [He was] just such a gentleman … There is something about that that is so charming and endearing to me.”

She’d also like to meet someone with a “sense of adventure,” she added. “I worked my whole life getting to this place in life and had planned on having all those adventures with John.”

“I am ready for somebody [who is] ready to have some fun,” Joan concluded. “You only get to live once. It’s a big world, and I’m ready to see it. I feel like I gotta get moving.”

The Golden Bachelorette is set to premiere sometime in the Fall of 2024.
