Heather Dubrow on LGBTQ+ Struggles: ‘The Problem Isn’t the Kids, It’s the Adults’

Heather Dubrow is easy to love on The Real Housewives of Orange County for several reasons. While her co-stars might hate her for it, she’s usually always rational and right. Heather is smart, quick-witted and still knows how to bring the drama. It’s why her return to RHOC was so monumental – she’s always stood out on the longest-running Real Housewives show.

Heather is also an amazing mom. No, it’s not because she builds mansions and buys her kids everything they want. You can tell she’s fostered a close relationship with her four kids. It doesn’t feel manufactured for the cameras – we’re watching the reality of the Dubrow family.

Part of that includes Heather being open about her kids identifying as LGBTQ+. Heather has done nothing but love and accept her children for who they are, and it’s beautiful to watch. Now, she’s making us love her even more in a recent love letter to her LGBTQ+ children in honor of Pride Month.

Heather recently spoke to TODAY.com about raising LGBTQ+ children and loving them for who they are. She spoke about how, as a parent, she’s always prioritized creating a home where her children felt comfortable expressing their feelings.

“I think that’s why I don’t have any dramatic coming-out stories to share about my kids,” Heather said. “With all of them, it was just a normal, ongoing conversation. There was never a big moment.”

Heather praised her three kids who identify within the LGBTQ+ community – Max, Kat and Ace. They identify as bisexual, lesbian, and transgender respectively. But, Heather said she doesn’t like to put labels on her kids because they are fluid and still figuring out their identities.

“I wish I could bubble wrap all of my children to protect them from any pain,” Heather said of her kids. “But I can’t. What I can do is give them the tools they need to go out in the world.”

Her advice to parents is to love, support, take care of, and listen to their children, no matter what. “The problem isn’t the kids — it’s the adults,” Heather said. “I have to create an environment for my children where they feel protected. I’m not telling their stories for them, but I can discuss what our familial experience has been.”

Snaps for Heather for always demonstrating what being an accepting, supportive parent looks like.

Real Housewives of Orange County Season 18 premieres July 11 at 9/8c on Bravo.
