When they first premiered on Below Deck Mediterannean, Captain Sandy Yawn and Hannah Ferrier were polarizing characters. Captain Sandy was and still is the micromanaging queen of her vessel, but she cares about her crew. Hannah was the tough chief stew with boundaries. Together, these two women should have been a match made in heaven, but most of the time, they were at odds. Since the captain joined the franchise back in Season 2, fans have been talking about their work relationship or lack thereof.

Where it all started

Season 3 of Below Deck Mediterannean was where Captain Sandy started to become frustrated with the Australian native. Sandy lost it on the chief stew after she went on a tender ride that was only supposed to be one hour. As we now know, it turned into a five-hour tour.

Sandy asked Hannah why she thought it was okay to be sick the previous day and then hang her team out to dry with a joy ride. But Hannah fought tooth and nail to come across in the right.

“You know, Hannah, you actually think what you did today was okay. That’s the most disturbing.” As the chief stew kept digging herself a hole, the captain finally snapped and said, “We’re done. The rest of this charter you stay away from me. I am so angry.” Hannah never really learned the two basic rules of yachting: keep your word and never talk back to the captain.

Hannah and her excuses

Looking back, I am not sure Captain Sandy and Hannah ever really got along. Season 4 showed the skipper becoming fed up with all the chief stew’s excuses for why she wasn’t doing her job properly. On the last day of the last charter of the season, Hannah was literally caught sleeping on the job. Captain Sandy was forced to wake her up so she could make a table setting. The captain could not be calmed as she stated, “We are different when it comes to that level of service.”

The final straw

In Season 5, all hell literally broke loose. Malia White, who was bunking with Hannah, reported the chief stew for stashing Valium on board. All drugs needed to be registered with the boat’s medic, but Hannah failed to do so. Malia sent a phone photo to Captain Sandy, which showed Hannah’s vape pen and drugs. Without hesitating, the captain fired the chief stew on the spot. Even though Hannah claimed that the Valium was for anxiety, she had allegedly put the whole crew at risk with their marine license. While nothing was comical about the situation, I remember laughing when Hannah yawned and made sure to walk the plank with a Diet Coke.

After show shots

After the firing, the two women didn’t hold back as they went head-to-head. Hannah shared while on Side Piece with Melissa Pfeister’s podcast that “there was some weird competitive thing going on” with Sandy. The mother of one went on to claim, “But I don’t think we were competing on our work positions. I think she was competitive with me on the TV side of things.”

When speaking to Showbiz Cheat Sheet, Sandy quickly shut down those thoughts, sharing, “That’s not true. I’m a real captain and I expect a level of service. Hannah was there for the camera. I was there as a captain. Two different things. I actually care about yachting. And I care about my job. I’m a captain, and she waits tables.” In 2022, Hannah revealed on the Kyle & Jackie O Show podcast that Sandy had decided not to like her from the start. The former chief stew noted, “It was like about 45 seconds from our first introduction they had to stop production and be, like, ‘Sandy, you can’t talk to her like that.’ Like straight off the bat.”

The feud has ended

I most certainly didn’t have Hannah and Captain Sandy calling a truce on my 2024 Bravo Bingo card. While Captain Sandy was down under, it appeared that she had met up with Hannah. The Below Deck Mediterranean captain revealed the news while speaking on a radio show. The newlywed revealed, “I saw Hannah the other night, and we had a great conversation. A lot of people think I don’t like her. But I don’t not like anyone. Honestly, I like Hannah. I actually care about Hannah. She knows that. I hope she’s listening because I do care about Hannah.”

According to Sandy, the former coworkers “had a great conversation. I went to her house, and I met her baby.” Who knew 2024 would be the year the feud was put to rest? I think it’s time to go out and buy a lottery ticket because it must be a full moon somewhere.
