Shannon Beador Admits Using Alcohol as a ‘Coping Mechanism’ Before DUI

Ever since we met Shannon Beador on Real Housewives of Orange County, she’s made her boozy tendencies well known. Whether it was throwing back tequila shots with the Tres Amigas or ordering a vodka neat with a side of club soda at dinner, Shannon has made it clear on RHOC that she enjoys a cocktail or two.

After Shannon’s messy DUI, most people expected her to put the bottle down for good. Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do when your drinking lands you behind bars? For Shannon, that’s just not realistic, and she isn’t afraid to admit it.

They still call her name

Over the last few months, Shannon has been trying to put her DUI in the rearview mirror. She recently completed her community service, and she looked as fresh as a daisy in the RHOC Season 18 premiere. However, she also raised a few eyebrows after the trailer showed her drinking again. Her castmates seem concerned, but in n a recent interview with People, Shannon explained why going stone-cold sober isn’t something on her radar.

“If I choose to drink when I go out, I keep it to a minimum. And one or two drinks typically is what’ll happen — especially if I go on vacation,” Shannon explained.

She continued, “And you’ll see the season when we went on our all-cast trip, I ordered a drink or two when we went out — because I never want it to look like I’m sneaking — and I was fine.”

It’s been almost a year since Shannon’s DUI, and she said she’s done a lot of soul-searching since then. She entered a counseling program that had an “alcohol component.” Through that process, she realized how much pain she still carried from her divorce from David Beador and the “miserable” relationship she had with John Janssen. These days, she feels like she’s in a better place to enjoy a cocktail or two. Moderation is key.

“I acknowledge that I was drinking a lot — a lot — back then, but today I’m not,” Shannon explained. “I was using alcohol as a coping mechanism. And I know I can’t do that anymore.”

Real Housewives of Orange County continues on Bravo, Thursday nights at 9/8c.
