Love Island UK Season 11 saw history in the making with the show’s first Black couple taking home the cash prize. Mimii Ngulube and Josh Oyinsan walked away with £50,000 and a bond which they hope will last a long, long time.
But on top of the celebrated romance comes the celebration of diversity. As with many aspects of Western media, reality TV hasn’t always been an inclusive field. Whether due to explicit or internalized prejudices, white people often dominated the reality TV screens.
As such, it came as no wonder that outlets referred to Josh and Mimii’s win as history-making. Nevertheless, the couple was somewhat shocked to see it that way. Read on to see what they thought of their groundbreaking win.
Josh and Mimii hope for greater “diverse representation
In their post-season interview with ITV, Mimii and Josh discussed how winning felt. Mimii said, “It feels so surreal, I don’t even have words right now to describe it. I want to thank everyone for all the love, it was the best time of my life.” Josh agreed, saying he was so glad that everyone could see their “authentic connection.”
As for their reactions to being the first Black couple to win the show, Mimii said, “I’m so shocked about it. It’s nice. Hopefully, it will set pace for more diverse representation. It’s overwhelming, but in the best possible way.” Josh agreed, saying, “I definitely feel proud. To be able to add a little bit to help balance the scales, if it means greater diverse representation, that is great. We are just happy to write history.”
So, what comes next after making history? For these two, travel. Josh shared that he had “a few restaurants I want to take her to. Also to find our dynamic outside the Villa and get used to that, that’s what I’m looking forward to.” At this same time next year, Mimii said she hoped they would be in Turks and Caicos.
