Hulu is now trying to secure the MomTok audience, apparently, with The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. The new series revolves around multiple Mormon wives who were swept up in a cheating scandal two years ago. For those who aren’t chronically online, here’s the context.
In May 2022, TikTok star Taylor Frankie Paul’s husband filed for divorce. With their marriage ending, Paul took to social media to say that she and her husband were part of a “soft swinging” community. The two would engage in relationships with other married couples – everything short of penetrative sex.
What makes the situation even more bizarre is the group’s religious affiliation. All were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often referred to as the Mormon church. As one might imagine, a married swingers club is frowned upon in the church. But is there more to the story?
Mormon MomTok influencers get their own reality show
In a logline shared with TooFab, Hulu described the unscripted show’s high drama. “The scandalous world of a group of Mormon mom influencers implodes when they get caught in the midst of a swinging sex scandal that makes international headlines. Now, their sisterhood is shook to its core. Faith, friendship and reputations are all on the line.”
The logline continued, “Will #MomTok be able to survive and continue to give the rulebook a run for its money, or will this group fall from grace?” The show will star multiple #MomTok influencers, including the aforementioned Taylor Frankie Paul, Demi Engemann, Jennifer Affleck, Jessi Ngatikaura, Layla Wessel, Mayci Neeley, Mikayla Matthews, and Whitney Leavitt.
This would be far from Mormonism’s first brush with reality TV. Sister Wives follows a family part of a Mormon fundamentalist group, albeit separate from the mainline church. The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City dips into the church every once in a while given the organization’s prevalence in Utah. Will Hulu’s show measure up to these hard hitters? We’ll see.
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives hits Hulu on September 6.
