How Captain Sandy Put Rude Below Deck Med Guests in Their Place

It was a short, but definitely not sweet, charter on Below Deck Mediterranean. The guests barely boarded the boat before demanding that a deck couch be moved to make for a better photo. The rude behavior did not escape Captain Sandy Yawn. And to her credit, she made sure to support her crew.

Before the intervention, the guests complained about the caviar and suggested that sandwiches were too plebian for a late-night snack. But the atmosphere really changed when a charter guest didn’t like being corrected over cutlery.

Aesha had to “stand up for” herself

Aesha Scott corrected the female guest when she mistook a fish knife for a butter knife.

“Oh she’s going to school me?” the guest asked her friends, as the chief stew waited on the dinner table.

“I’ve worked in service a very long time and it’s a fish knife. It’s because fish is not supposed to be tough, it’s supposed to be smooth,” the New Zealand native responded.

The woman then snarked that Aesha’s “caviar service sucked.”

“These are people that like to claim that they are from the upper class but where is the class part?” Aesha reacted in a confessional . “I am experienced enough and I am good enough at my job that I actually don’t care if biting back at these guests gets me in trouble. I’ve got to stand up for myself at some point.”

Sandy asked the guests to be “gracious” to her crew

The incident was relayed to Sandy, who gave the guests a pep talk the following morning.

“I always say this. If you beat character down, you are going to kill their spirit. But if you are gracious and thankful, you are going to build them up and they are going to want to do more for you,” she said. “I had a client who spent a million euros on a charter and they were so rude to my crew. I pulled the primary in and I said, ‘I will cancel your charter tomorrow if you treat my staff like that again.’”

Sandy continued: “They turned it around like that because I called the owner and he goes, ‘I don’t need the money. Let them go. End the charter.’ They turned it around to the point where they were clearing their plates. And we were like, ‘No, you don’t have to clear your plates. Just be kind.’”

The offending party declared herself “over” the conversation. Clearly, aware of its intent.

“How you treat others is really important,” Sandy told producers. “From what Aesha and the other crew are saying to me, the clients are difficult. Did I get my point across?”
