Dancing with the Stars professional dancer Peta Murgatroyd is taking a well-deserved break from the ballroom. Instead, she’ll be spending more time in the nursery. Peta just gave birth to her and Maks Chmerkovskiy’s third son, Milan Maksim Chmerkovskiy, only a month ago.
In an August 29 Instagram Live, Peta announced, “Dancing With the Stars, guys, I’m sorry, it’s not this season … It’s just too soon.”
Peta Murgatroyd’s body is still healing
Peta also shares sons Shai (7) and Rio (13 months) with her husband Maks. In Season 32 of DWTS, she partnered with Brady Bunch alum Barry Williams. At that time she was only 10 weeks postpartum with Rio, but she couldn’t wait to get back into the ballroom.
“I miss dance. I miss the show,” Peta told E! News in September 2023. “It’s only one time a year. And if I can make it work with getting people in to help me out with looking after the kids for a few hours a day, then I’m gonna do it.”
But not only is she still recovering from giving birth, but she’s still bonding with her baby boy. Milan was a surprise.
Peta discovered she was pregnant again only four months after giving birth to Rio. She wasn’t feeling well, so she took a test and was surprised when it was positive. After suffering three miscarriages and using IVF to conceive Rio, the couple was happy but shocked to conceive so soon. But Maks and Peta have wanted a big family from the beginning, so all is good.
Who will dance in DWTS Season 33?
Peta first joined DWTS in 2011 as a member of the show’s Season 12 dance troupe. After proving herself, she moved up to dancing pro in Season 13. During her time on the show, she’s taken home the coveted Mirror Ball trophy twice, once in Season 14 and again in Season 22.
Her favorite part of being part of the cast is “working [with] and meeting new people.” Last season, she loved being a partner to Barry, who she calls “a gem.”
“Barry’s been an amazing person to have in my life,” she said at the time. “I’m grateful.”
The pair finished the season in seventh place, largely due to Barry’s enduring fan popularity from his days as Greg Brady rather than his skill as a dancer.
In addition to Peta, neither Artem Chigvintsev nor Lindsay Arnold will return to the ballroom this year. Lindsay has two young children at home, while Artem is dealing with other issues. But Lindsay’s BFF, Witney Carson, just announced yesterday that she’s returning to the dancefloor after taking last season off to have her second child.
Season 33’s full cast list will be announced on Wednesday, September 4.
Dancing with the Stars Season 33 premieres on September 17 at 8/7c on ABC.
