Is the known criminal Anna Delvey going to join Dancing with the Stars? It would be quite the casting choice if she was. For those unaware, Anna Sorokin – or Anna Delvey as she’s known – was a famous con artist and fraudster who’s now on house arrest for her crimes.
She posed as a wealthy heiress in order to access New York’s upper-class art scene. Reports estimate that she stole about $275,000. After defrauding wealth managers and financial advisers, Anna became quite the celebrity. She now boasts an Instagram following of over one million people. Moreover, Netflix made a series all about her, given the public’s fascination with true crime.
Now, Anna touts herself as a fashion publicist, despite still being on house arrest. Under her current sentence, she can only work and travel within 70 miles of her home. However, if the DWTS rumors are true, she may have received a pass to do some work in LA.
Is Anna the first criminal to join Dancing with the Stars?
On August 30, Page Six reported that Anna Delvey would join Dancing with the Stars Season 33. The outlet did not reveal a source for this claim. When they reached out to one of the show’s reps, they responded that they wouldn’t comment on casting “rumors.” So, the truth of this claim remains up in the air.
But if the rumor is true, it would set a new precedent for DWTS. The show has hosted various stars who’ve faced jail time. Page Six pointed out Tommy Chong, Lil Kim, and Steve O as examples. However, if Anna were to compete, she’d be the show’s first contestant whose fame stems from her crimes.
While viewers love stories of true crime, perhaps things have gone too far. If Anna were to appear on DWTS, wouldn’t that just be rewarding her for her crimes? More than she’s already been rewarded, mind. Granted, ABC is no stranger to controversial casting choices in the ballroom.
Dancing with the Stars Season 33 hits ABC on September 17 at 8/7c.
