Who knew we would be begging for Dance Moms: A New Era as a society? I thought we got our fill with the original series. Between the constant screeching of Abby Lee Miller and little girls crying, it all became too much. But leave it to Hulu to reinvent the wheel and release their own reboot. After watching it, I loved it. But what impressed me the most was how viewers were given a back story to each dancer, including a sassy tagline!

7. Mina’s tagline

Mina was the eight-year-old ninja we all needed on the dance team. She was ruthless and didn’t accept tears from anyone. But I think she adopted that attitude from her mother, who never seemed to compliment her daughter. While dancing, little Mina shared, “My mom is definitely the strictest dance mom I’ve ever had.” I’ll be honest: Mina was my favorite because she didn’t always realize what she was saying. She was a perfect example of kids saying the darndest things.

6. Ashlan’s tagline

The blonde of the group, Ashlan, was anything but humble. The dancer was often caught yelling at her mother for not using the right blender brush and throwing major tantrums backstage. So when her tagline dropped, “I love dancing, but sometimes I wish my mom didn’t have to come with me,” it made sense. Ashlan was the face of the team. She was sassy and best known for crying. Even though she was one hell of a performer, she came across as bratty. I couldn’t help but wonder if we had a pre-teen on our hands regarding the behavior.

5. Audrey’s tagline

From day one, it was obvious that Ms. Glo loved Audrey. It could be that she was a talented dancer, but it could also have been because Glo was living rent-free in her basement. As Audrey practiced her solo, she noted, “Everyone thinks I’m Ms. Glo’s favorite, but that’s just cause I am.” I feel like we have another Maddie Zigler on our hands. Audrey could do no wrong in her teacher’s eyes, even when she obviously faked being hurt to get out of a dance.

4. Bellatrix’s tagline

Bellatrix means warrior, and Bellatrix was definitely a strong dancer. Early on, viewers learn that Bella’s mom, Roxce, is a scrappy spectator. She found herself embroiled in multiple fights that even turned physical. Roxce threw another girl’s mirror and pushed one of the moms. So it made sense Bellatrix’s tagline was, “My mom’s always fighting for me, but I’m always fighting for a spot in the front.”

3. Leilah’s tagline

I loved Leilah. She was talented and held a special spot in Ms. Glo’s heart because she reminded her of her own daughter. But the ten-year-old found it hard to concentrate at times. Leilah proudly noted, “I love performing on stage. I just don’t really like the rehearsing part.” Leslie, Leilah’s mother, felt it was her fault because she couldn’t dedicate every waking minute to dance. But I think Leilah was just a normal kid with a short attention span.

2. Lilly’s tagline

Lilly had a heart of gold. Due to bone issues, the tiny dancer had to work twice as hard to stick with dance, but she was beautiful to watch. Her mother, Connie, came in hot and almost found herself on the outs with Ms. Glo. But eventually, she simmered down and let her daughter shine. When first introduced, Lilly shared, “I’m the newest to the studio, but my mom already expects me to be number one.”

1. Smiley’s tagline

For multiple episodes, I wondered, “Who names their kid Smiley.” It wasn’t until this article that I learned her name was Isabel. Smiley was known as the pretty face who could cover her lack of dance moves with, you guessed it, a smile. Her mother, Dominica, was rough around the edges, and it felt like she was living through her daughter. So when Smiley came out with, “Everyone says I should be a model, and I mean, I agree with them, but I want to be a dancer,” I knew her mother was pushing her to be great.
