During Season 14 of Real Housewives of New Jersey, viewers saw Margaret Josephs learn that her husband, Joe Benigno, had prostate cancer. How is Joe doing these days?

“He’s OK,” Margaret said, adding that Joe got “three opinions” about his best course of action to treat the cancer. In the end, Joe decided not to have surgery.

Marge tells us why below.

“A lot of people are like, ‘Just get it out,’ [but] the treatment’s much worse,” she said. “If you get it out, you do have other issues … It is extremely curable, but with a lot of side effects.”

In addition, Margaret reports that Joe’s tumor is very slow-growing and “has not changed at all” in size. That’s good news.

“They said it might not grow for 10 years, so they just check him every few months,” she added.

During a routine checkup, one of Joe’s tests revealed that he had “slightly abnormal” exosomal RNA levels. Because the levels were only slightly elevated, the doctor reassured Joe and Marge that if it was cancer, they had found it in its early stages. A follow-up MRI confirmed the cancer diagnosis.

”He actually does have prostate cancer,” Margaret said, “and they’re just doing active surveillance right now [and] not treating it … He and I are both very strong, and he is a very strong man with it.”

Already a close couple, dealing with Joe’s cancer diagnosis has brought them even closer.

“Everything just brings us closer, and we realize what we have in our [lives],” Margaret explained. “We’re both very committed to each other, committed to our family, committed to our [lives] together.”

She admitted to feeling “very, very blessed” to be married to Joe.

“I’m really lucky,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of blows this year-and-a-half. I mean, first Jan [Josephs, Marge’s ex-husband] dies, and then I find out my husband has cancer.”
