During Season 1 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, viewers met Jen Affleck, and her husband, Zac Affleck. In case you were wondering, actor and director Ben Affleck is Zac’s cousin. Meanwhile, Jen is a busy mom of two and an influencer who supports the family while Zac is in medical school. And she is a member of #MomTok. That is a reversal of the more traditional male and female roles. However, they are both one of the more devout Mormon couples on the show. But cracks in their marriage, and Zac’s supposed controlling tendencies, came into view during The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ first season.
Jen Affleck says that her marriage to Zac Affleck is “great” on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives
When Jen went to Las Vegas and Jessi Ngatikaura surprised the group with tickets for Chippendales, Jen was torn. Zac had accompanied her to Vegas along with Taylor Frankie Paul’s boyfriend, Dakota Mortensen. Since Taylor was pregnant, the group drove. But the men stayed at a hotel since this was a girls’ trip. When Jen nervously texted Zac, he was furious. She left the venue with Taylor and Mikayla Matthews before the show started.
Jen told her co-stars, “He doesn’t want to be married to me if I do stuff like this … he started questioning me and my character and started saying why would you put yourself in this situation.” He also threatened to divorce Jen. Then Zac refused to speak with her and demanded that she see him at 2 a.m., so she hopped in an Uber in Las Vegas. Not cool, dude. Plus, Zac was gambling, which is frowned upon in the Mormon Church.
Jen told TooFab that watching the show will “definitely be exposure therapy.” She continued, “I think we’ll be able to watch the first couple episodes together. As for the end, I might have to watch it by myself. In a room. With a tissue box.”
How did Jen and Zac improve their marriage?
As for how their marriage is now? Jen stated that currently, it is “great.” Jen explained, “I feel like since the show ended, we’ve been doing nonstop therapy. And so at this point, I really feel like we’ve healed from everything and we’ve been completely vulnerable and honest.”
She continued, “It definitely needed to happen. It’s definitely helped us in so many ways. And I think at this point, it’s only just exposure therapy.”
After Demi Engemann and her other co-stars called out Zac as an example of the misogyny present in some male members of the Mormon Church, Jen did some thinking. And then she did some research. “And when I actually took time to study the doctrine, study what the church actually teaches, there’s nothing in the church that teaches that we have specific gender roles,” Jen stated. “That’s not the case at all. What matters is that we are equal. And applying that into our lives after the show helped us so much,” the successful influencer added.
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is streaming on Hulu.
