Why Below Deck Med’s Nathan Gallagher and Gael Cameron Ended Their Romance

As Season 9 of Below Deck Mediterranean came to a close, deckhands Nathan Gallagher and Gael Cameron seemed pretty cozy as a couple. They were not only trading “I love you’s,” but they were planning to do some traveling together.

Nathan admitted that he was completely smitten and could see Gael being in his life for a while. They really seemed to fit.

But sadly, like so many yachtie romances, they didn’t last.

Gael Cameron started to “see a different side” of Nathan Gallagher

Everybody loved Nathan and Gael together. They hit it off right away, even though Gael already had a boyfriend at the time. But it just wasn’t meant to be. They did do some traveling after the charter season ended before the romance fizzled out. They both sat down on the Below Deck Med After Show to tell us what happened.

“For the most part, it was really great,” Gael tells Chief Stew Aesha Scott. “[Nathan] just has a lot of emotional maturing to do. I definitely started to see a different side to him.”

When Aesha asks her to clarify, Gael adds that she saw “a little bit of anger, a little bit of stubbornness [and] immaturity.”

For his part, Nathan tells Joe Bradley there were other factors at work, as well. “Once we went apart, I started a new job,” Nathan shares. “[Gael] was back in Australia. The time zones [made it] very difficult to communicate. So we were only doing good mornings or goodnights, really. I just started second-guessing everything.”

“We were making plans,” Gael continues. “He had one month on and one month off, so we were supposed to see each other a month later.”

Meanwhile, Nathan decided “it was best” to tell Gael, “I don’t know if it’s going to work. Maybe if you come back to Europe, we can try … But right now, the distance is difficult.”

“Some people just shouldn’t date”

“We hadn’t had a phone call in two weeks,” Gael continues. “I knew something was up. And then, he just pretty much ghosted me. Eventually, I was, like, ‘Dude, what’s going on?’ Like, I’m worried something’s happened. And then he’s like, ‘My ex called me, and I want to give it another go.’ And I was, like, ‘Oh, gotcha!'”

But then, “He started talking to me again, ” Gael adds.

“Did he come crawling back?” Aesha asks, amazed.

“I said to him, ‘Aren’t you with your ex?’ I called him out on it,” Gael admits. “And he’s like, ‘No, I never got back with her.’ [But] I didn’t really believe him if I’m being honest. I was like, ‘Yeah, you’re full of it.'”

“He probably tried,” Aesha interjects, “and it didn’t work.”

“He tried to make it work with me again,” Gael says, “and then, history just keeps repeating itself. I really wish we just stayed friends ’cause I think he’s a great friend … He’s someone who’s awesome to be around, he’s hilarious. I just think some people are great friends, and some people you just shouldn’t date.”

Nathan says, “We talk every other day. We still stay in touch. It’s nice to see what she’s doing and how she is, just to make sure she’s okay.”

When a producer asks Nathan if there’s any “hope for the future” with Gael, he confesses, “I wouldn’t rule it out. I wouldn’t say it’s a closed book.”

For Gael’s part, she has some regrets, but “If we had stayed friends … I just wouldn’t have a bad word to say about him.”

All episodes of Below Deck Med are available to stream on Peacock.
