Guerdy Abraira Reflects on Chemo Treatment: ‘I Walked Like a Skeleton’

When Guerdy Abraira announced her breast cancer diagnosis, she made a promise to “Guerdify” cancer. She accomplished that goal, but we know it wasn’t easy. Bravely, she gave us a firsthand look at the journey on The Real Housewives of Miami, and now, she’s reflecting on her journey, including her chemo treatment.

Guerdy underwent a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and multiple rounds of radiation and has been incredibly transparent every step of the way. Today, she is cancer-free, but she recently reflected on her battle and the devastating effects chemotherapy had on her body. Not only did it have a physical impact on her, but the whole experience became an emotional burden for her entire family.

Guerdy spoke to People about her experience with chemotherapy, and she explained how it had a trickle-down effect on her entire life. Of course, there are the physical side-effects, but she also had a hard time navigating her role as a wife, a mother, and a business owner.

“I’m a party planner, so I control everything,” Guerdy explained. “My whole life is organized and I control my environment, I control what I get to do, I control everything about me.”

Guerdy noted that the cancer was “so uncontrollable” that she had no idea how to deal with it. Doctors appointments, pills, unexpected physical symptoms — Guerdy said it was all a lot to manage.

“Chemo will show you your mortality in three seconds,” Guerdy admitted. “It’s no game. For 10 days [after each treatment] I was in bed. Chemo fog is real and I walked like a skeleton — it felt like my bones were about to break.”

When Guerdy spent all of that time bedridden, she didn’t want her kids to see her in a “weakened state.” However, they would still come to visit her bedroom in the house, which Guerdy likened to a “hospital room.” They’d play charades, watch movies, and try to make the bedroom feel as lively as possible. Surely, that time together was healing in its own way.

These days, now that Guerdy is cancer-free, she is focused on living life to its fullest. She said she’s devoting as much time as possible to loving on her kiddos and spending as much time together as possible. She wants to make up for lost time.

“I’m obsessed with my life right now,” Guerdy said. “I’m up in my kids’ business all day long, every day. We’re closer than ever.”
