Well, we’re back, with the recap for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5, Episode 1. Last season saw Gary, Colin, and Daisy in a doomed love triangle, which blew up at the end of the season. What will Gary and Daisy’s working relationship be like following all that drama, especially now that Colin is gone? Here’s exactly what went down in the BDSY Season 5 Premiere: “Ibiza, Baby!”

In this week’s episode, Gary and Daisy’s relationship is still tense, following the events of last season. Daisy attempts to foster a team relationship with her stews, while Gary vows to show that he can be a good leader. Daisy allows the first charter guests to place specific dinner orders, which causes chaos in the galley. Here are some of the highlights from the BDSY Season 5 Premiere.

Gary’s turning over a new leaf this season … or so he says. He wants to work on his leadership skills. His new motto is, “Gary is ‘work hard and work harder.’”

Daisy says she’s over Gary. Last season he made her life very hard. He didn’t respect her relationship with Colin. She’s not looking forward to having to work with him again.

Captain Glenn meets with his new crew and lays down some guidelines about behavior. Daisy’s still harboring some resentment from last season. Gary was a distraction. This season, she’s not going to let that happen to her again. Daisy’s “taking back the reigns.”

After giving her new stews a tour of the boat, Daisy says she’s not going to assign a second and third stew, preferring more of a “team environment.” That’s a great idea. That system would have saved Aesha a lot of headaches on Below Deck Med Season 9.

Junior Stew Diana (pronounced “Dee-ahnna”) is from Portugal, but she has a lot of experience on Russian superyachts. Many of them were seized by US authorities as punishment for the war on Ukraine. Diana was there and says, “[I] cannot say much about it, but, you know, I’ve met the FBI.”

For her part, Junior Stew Danni is already flirting with the boys on the boat. She thinks Keith and Gary are both cute. Stay away from Gary, Danni. He’s trouble.

Daisy’s still angry with Gary for ignoring her after she and Colin broke up. She was alone and lonely. “I needed you,” she says. “I’m f*cking upset that you ignored me when I was asking to speak to you … You just left me on my own, trying to figure it out.”

He says he wanted to speak to her but was afraid of creating more drama. Gary had to “take a step away just for some clarity.” But now he wonders if he wasn’t a good friend for abandoning her that way.

Finally, Gary gives her a hug and apologizes for not being there for her. Even though she appreciates his apology, she’s also aware that “this isn’t going to be the last time he hurts me.”

Daisy makes a major mistake with the guests’ dinner orders

The first charter guests arrive. Snacks and cocktails are the order of the day. Chef Cloyce is planning to do a Surf ‘n Turf dinner, but one of the guests doesn’t eat pork or beef, while another is allergic to shellfish. He says he can do red snapper for the one who’s allergic and asks Daisy to check with the other guest to see if chicken is okay. Thank goodness he’s keeping track of food allergies and preferences – take note, Chef Jono!

Unfortunately, when Daisy goes to ask the two guests their preferences, the other guests jump in and start making their own special requests. That goes against Cloyce’s previous instructions of avoiding “specific orders,” making his job harder.

“Whoops,” she interviews. “That was a f*ck-up.” Needless to say, Chef isn’t pleased. “Thanks, Daisy,” he says in a confessional. “That’s awesome.”

The first sail of the season on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5

Once everyone’s settled in, it’s time for the first sail of the season. Daisy instructs her stews to start stowing things away, so they won’t slide and break when the boat keels. Ugh. I hate this part.

As soon as the sails are up, Glenn turns off the engines. “We’re sailing now,” he announces. Gary spots a pod of dolphins off the port side.

Later, as they’re dropping the anchor, Gary realizes deckhand Emma doesn’t have as much experience as he previously thought. But he wants to be a captain someday, so he’s determined to train her and prove that he can be a good leader.

When Keith gives Danni a hand with table decoration, she can’t help flirting with him.

“I think Danni is hilarious,” Keith interviews. “She’s super vibrant, immediately attractive, but in a working environment, it’s good to take things slowly … You can joke, you can banter, but there’s lines that you really don’t want to cross.”

But Danni just wants him to treat her “like a [boat] fender … just pick me up and throw me around.”

Daisy gets off on the wrong foot with Chef Cloyce

The dinner for night one is planned for 8:30. Chef is busy preparing everyone’s special requests, but it’s a little confusing how many steaks, lobsters, snapper, and lamb he’s supposed to cook. Glenn is sitting at the table in the crew mess, just observing how it’s all going.

When Daisy starts serving the plates, there’s uncertainty about who ordered well done and who wanted medium. Part of the problem is that the medium steaks sat in the warmer and became well done while waiting for Chef to finish the fish.

“Daisy took a bunch of f*cking orders,” Cloyce interviews, “after [we had] a pretty specific conversation that we were not going to do this. I mean, come on. It’s not okay.”

Meanwhile, some of the guests have food, while others are still waiting. Not off to a good start.

“This whole f*cking thing is his fault,” Daisy says in a confessional. “I tell him what the food order is. It is up to you to cook it, to put it on the plate, and to send it out. It’s very chaotic.”

“If tonight is any indication of Cloyce and Daisy’s interdepartmental relationship,” Captain Glenn interviews, “what I’m seeing now has got me worried.”

“I guess I’m just an idiot,” Cloyce says in frustration.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht airs Mondays at 9/8c on Bravo.
