Dancing with the Stars Season 33, Episode 4 celebrated the glorious time of Hair Metal. The contestants rocked out to songs by Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Twisted Sister, and Poison. I was impressed because the mullet game was strong for this episode. It was so strong that I couldn’t even see some of the male dancer’s faces!
Last time on DWTS, we saw the contestants get their boogie on and dance to the signature sounds of Soul Train. There was no elimination. Once again, Chandler Kinney and her partner, Brandon Armstrong, topped the leaderboard with their hip-hop-flavored Cha-Cha. In second place, Bachelor star Joey Graziadei and Jenna Johnson impressed the judges with their lightning-fast Jive.
And Reginal VelJohnson and his partner, Emma Slater, landed at the bottom of the leaderboard. In a shocking twist, Dwight Howard and Daniella Karagach landed in second to last place with their Cha-Cha.
All of the judges’ scores and viewers’ votes from Soul Train Night will be combined with tonight’s scores. Here’s what went down…
What happened in Dancing with the Stars, Season 33, Episode 4?
Hair Metal Night kicked off with a pyrotechnic-filled opening number to Rock and Roll All Nite by KISS. Pasha Pashkov choreographed the routine, and Whitesnake guitarist Joel Hoekstra performed. He also popped up to shred throughout the show. Unfortunately for the competitors, there was another double-elimination.
Legendary KISS member Gene Simmons was a guest judge. And he was all over the map. His comments didn’t match the scores, and he punched in a 9 for Brooks Nader and Gleb Savchenko but decided to show a 10-paddle.
Plus, he was a bit creepy towards the female contestants, telling Chandler that she “fogged up my glasses” and mentioned her “gyrations.” But overall, it was a fun night.
Who was eliminated in Dancing with the Stars Season 33, Episode 4?
Reginald Vel Johnson and Emma Slater were eliminated, along with Eric Roberts and Britt Stewart in Dancing with the Stars Season 33, Episode 4!
Both Reginald and Eric received tough feedback from the judges for their performances. Reginald had a knee replacement a year ago and was dealing with pain. As for Eric, he was still dealing with the effects of a car accident that nearly took his life.
Reginald’s Cha-Cha to Twisted Sister’s song, I Wanna Rock, was light on content. “It’s so engaging to watch. You’re doing the fewest amount of steps of anybody else in this competition, but somehow we’re so with you,” judge Carrie Ann Inaba said.
Meanwhile, Eric and Britt’s Paso Doble to Cherry Pie by Warrant also received a low score. Derek Hough said, “You can see how hard you’re working. You lost time in the middle, but again, I love your spirit.”
Both men were class acts. When asked how he felt about working with Britt, Eric said, “I have never had a better working experience in my entire professional life.” And Reginald said of Emma, “This has been a very special occasion, and she has been very special to me.” It is sad to bid these two stars goodbye.
Who got the top score of the night in Dancing with the Stars Season 33, Episode 4?
Joey Graziadei and Jenna Johnson got the highest score in Dancing with the Stars Season 33, Episode 4.
Joey and Jenna delivered a sexy and fiery Tango set to the Scorpions hit, Rock You Like A Hurricane. (The songs were chosen weeks ago before the horrific recent hurricanes). The number opened with Joey playing drums.
Plus, Joey has lost his Golden Retriever energy and replaced it with leading man energy. And the judges were thrilled with his performance. “Listen, that was honestly one of the best Tangos I’ve seen from a male celebrity – ever. That was phenomenal,” Derek said.
“Clearly, you’ve got the goods inside of you. Don’t quit now,” Gene stated. Bruno added, “Well, that is how you rock and Tango! You are the leader of the pack!”
It is obvious how hard Joey works, and his eye is focused on taking home The Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy. He has moved up to the top section of the leaderboard in the last couple of episodes, and he continues to improve.
What were the judge’s scores in DWTS Season 33, Episode 4?
These are the combined judges’ scores from last night and tonight.
- Joey Graziadei and Jenna Johnson (Tango) – 70 points
- Chandler Kinney and Brandon Armstrong (Jive) – 69 points
- Jenn Tran and Sasha Farber (Paso Doble) – 62 points
- Stephen Nedoroscik and Rylee Arnold (Foxtrot) – 62 points
- Brooks Nader and Gleb Savchenko (Cha-Cha) – 61 points
- Danny Amendola and Witney Carson (Paso Doble) – 60 points
- Ilona Maher and Alan Bersten (Jive) – 56 points
- Phaedra Parks and Val Chmerkovskiy (Paso Doble) – 56 points
- Dwight Howard and Daniella Karagach (Paso Doble) – 52 points
- Eric Roberts and Britt Stewart (Paso Doble) – 46 points
- Reginald VelJohnson and Emma Slater (Cha-Cha) – 42 points
I really liked Danny and Witney’s performance. Danny has no performance experience, and I think he is still nervous. However, the judges want to see more polish and refinement.
In addition, I loved Jenn and Sasha’s Paso Doble. They both did knee walks across the floor! WOW. “Jenn, there was a beautiful, strong calmness about you tonight that projected strength on that floor,” Derek said. Then Bruno proclaimed, “Talk about electrifying. I think you blew my fuses with that Paso Doble.”
Next, I was floored by Chandler and Brandon’s Jive. It was fast, furious, and full of attitude. However, the judges commented on her losing steam at the end of the routine. There was also a little slip. Then Carrie Ann gave Chandler a note. “I think that when you perform, I think you could be a little bit sharper, almost like a blue tint, like sharp and clean,” she explained.
Meanwhile, Brooks and Gleb continued to display their sultry chemistry. Their Cha-Cha involved a stripper pole, and they touched tongues while dancing. “When a woman has something to prove, get out of her way,” Carrie Ann stated. “Girl, you just did that.” This couple is fully leaning into their showmance or real-life romance.
Final thoughts on Dancing with the Stars Season 33, Episode 4
I think that having Gene as a guest judge was a gamble. While Stephen and Rylee performed an epic Foxtrot to Here I Go Again by Whitesnake, guitarist Joel Hoekstra shredded standing on a car. Then Gene made some weird comment about Superman to Stephen that confused everyone. He may have been referring to Stephen at the Olympics, but if so, it didn’t land.
When Ilona became emotional, I felt bad for her. Her Jive didn’t go as well as it did in rehearsals. As a result, she cried while getting her feedback and scores. All the judges encouraged her to put it behind her and start fresh.
Finally, I want to shout out Phaedra’s friends who came to support her and Val. Real Housewives of Potomac star Karen Huger was in the ballroom, as were Real Housewives of Atlanta peaches Cynthia Bailey and Porsha Williams.
Next week is Dedication Night when the contestants share their emotional journeys. Mark Ballas will be back as a guest judge. Plus, Derek and his wife, Hayley Erbert (Hough), will perform together. As you may recall, Hayley suffered a medical emergency and had to have brain surgery. Thankfully, she has recovered and can dance again.
Dancing with the Stars Season 33 airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on ABC and Disney+.
