So far, Real Housewives of Salt Lake City friend-of, Britani Bateman has already provoked the ire of Mary Cosby and shared a lot about her chaotic on-and-off relationship with a scion of the Mormon and showbiz elite, Jared Osmond.
However, Britani’s facing some unfortunate turmoil off-camera as well. She’s embroiled in a lawsuit against her ex-husband, John Scott Underwood, for intentional infliction of emotional distress. Court documents revealed Britani’s sad and alarming allegations.
Britani Bateman claims that her ex-husband John was “very controlling and abusive” toward her
Daily Mail obtained documents from Britani’s suit, which she filed just two days after her and John’s divorce was finalized in October 2023. The actress/singer/real estate developer says that John inflicted “severe emotional distress” upon her throughout their six-and-a-half-year marriage.
Britani alleged that John was controlling. This included “dictating what clothing, makeup, perfume, and other beauty products Britani could and could not wear or use…”
She also says John required her “to submit to sexual intercourse on demand (sometimes several times a day) and prohibited her from ever complaining about it.” And, she had to “avert her eyes from any man in public.”
According to Britani, John mandated everything. She allegedly had to go to the gym every day and wear the nail polish colors John chose.
Britani accused John of being financially abusive as well. She says she had to report “every dollar she spent outside his presence” and tried to strip her of everything in their divorce.
The documents allege he also alienated Britani from her family. “John prohibited Britani from having frequent contact with her children, family members, and friends. John found it unacceptable for Britani to focus her attention on anyone other than him.”
Another of her allegations is that John would keep a running list of her missteps on a whiteboard, and he installed cameras in their home to “obsessively” monitor her and her children.
In one instance, Britani says John punished her for breaking a rule by having her and her daughter’s phones shut-off.
She’s seeking $2.5 million from him in punitive damages.
John Scott Underwood denied many of Britani’s claims and made some of his own
John responded to Britani’s filing with a counterclaim. In it, he denied being abusive or manipulative and also did not have a stringent set of rules.
He says Britani could come and go freely and had her own car. In response to her claims about their finances, he denied that he “ever acted to ensure that Britani received nothing.”
John admits he did turn off Britani and her daughter’s phones, because “while professing her love for him, she, without reason, ignored his calls and messages.”
His filing continued. “Britani was self-absorbed, materialistic, denigrating to John, talked down to John, exhibited passive-aggressive behaviors toward John, was egocentric, manipulative and always critical of John.”
“She has and continues to slander John and damage his character, reputation, ongoing business relationships, and prospective business relationships and associates. She has made false accusations of abuse against John and conspires with others to do the same.”
He contends that he “suffered severe or emotional distress.” She filed a response to his counterclaim asking the court to dismiss his claims with prejudice.
The case is still ongoing.
