This season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht has introduced viewers to chef Cloyce Martin. The young cook is full of confidence. After spending some time working on smaller boats in California with laid-back owners. I realized that this Mediterranean jaunt should be a walk in the park for him. But Bravo fans know that isn’t how the cookie crumbles out in the yachting world.
What does Cloyce Martin bring to the table?
Since the age of 14, Cloyce has been cooking up some inspiring meals in the kitchen. Now, at the age of 22, he is overly confident, but that could work in his favor. I’ve never seen a Below Deck Sailing Yacht chef take criticism so well. As far as I can tell, he hears the complaint and lets it run off him like water off a duck’s back. Personally, I think this is a great attribute. In the past, viewers have watched other chefs crumble under pressure and get inside their own heads. But it is not necessary to give Cloyce pep rallies before each meal.
While there have been a few bumps in the road overall, Cloyce seems competent. His plates looked delicious, and the little nibbles he first served for the guests also looked enticing, with one guest complimenting him. Cloyce is also handsome and funny. The chef doesn’t take life too seriously, which is probably good when you work in a high-stress job. His deadpan joke at the preference sheet meeting was great, even if the other three didn’t know how to react.
Cloyce Martin has room for improvement
Cloyce shocked Captain Glenn Shephard when he chose to hang out with the charter guests instead of preparing their lunch. Even though he assured Daisy Kelliher that preparing the chicken, salmon, and salads would only take 15 minutes, he was wrong. As Cloyce played with the water toys and rubbed elbows with the guests, Glenn freaked out, telling him to get his butt back to the boat. Leaving his galley on pause wasn’t the best of decisions.
The chef should also work on his communication with Daisy. It is hard to determine if he has a crush on her or doesn’t respect her chief stew status. Daisy has often pointed out that the crew’s tip usually depends on the type of food the chef prepares. Cloyce also seems dismissive of Daisy’s standards, which is proven by the clearing of the dinner table. In turn, a 17-minute wait delay was thrust onto the guests, who, luckily, were satiated with bread pudding. And let’s not forget that Cloyce became quite annoyed when Daisy asked for the dinner steaks to be cooked to order because of differing guest preferences.
Where does Cloyce Martin rank with the other Below Deck Sailing Yacht Chefs?
All right, today, as a critic, I’d have to place Cloyce toward the bottom of this list. Number one is easily Marcos Spaziani. He was a chef for 10 years after attending culinary school in Venezuela. He was not only a real gourmet but also easily got along with the rest of the cast. I miss him in the series. Next up would be Adam Glick from Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 1. Adam was one of the most praised characters in the franchise, but his reputation was only foiled by his interpersonal relationships.
I would place Cloyce next on the list. Even though his young age shouldn’t be a point against him, I think his immaturity shines through. No matter how many button-ups the man wears, it won’t be enough to have people think he is older in years. That means Natasha De Bourg is last. She appeared in Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 2. She had a real passion for the culinary arts, but it seems PitaGate is all fans remember her for. Viewers will recall that a controversy erupted after she exaggerated the number of pita bread slices she made for lunch one afternoon. So Cloyce might have an uphill battle, but I have faith he will pull through. And maybe he will be able to move up this list.
