We all know that Real Housewives of Potomac alum Candiace Dillard Bassett is a diva. So is it any surprise that she carried that diva attitude into the delivery room? It’s just too bad RHOP cameras weren’t there to capture it.
On October 3, while giving birth to son Jett Marshall Lee Bassett, Candiace pressed pause on her delivery for 10 minutes. She just needed a sec to touch up her makeup, cause every woman knows looking your best is the top issue on your mind while giving birth.
Are you kidding me? When my son was born, I’d been awake for nearly 48 hours, puking my guts out, in the worst pain of my entire life. After they wheeled me in for an emergency C-section, they held him up and asked if I wanted to kiss him. “Yeah, I guess,” I said listlessly before they wheeled me off to recovery. The last thing on my mind was my appearance.
“My son isn’t meeting me looking haggard”
“My epidural had kicked in, I was 10 cm dilated and my doctor comes and goes, ‘Okay, we’re ready for you to push,'” Candiace told People. “And I said, ‘Well, if we’re going to get started, I would like to put my makeup [on], because … I know we’re going to be taking pictures right after, and I need to look right! My son isn’t meeting me looking haggard like I just gave birth, and I can’t be putting on makeup with my baby in my hands.'”
“So yes, between contractions and pushes while I was in labor, I was doing my makeup,” Candiace laughs. “I have pictures of it, too. My doula was there, holding up a mirror and a ring light while I was get my face right. I had pin curls in, so I was taking those out. And my doctor was so supportive. She was like, ‘Yes, let’s do it!'”
The only person in the room who seemed to realize this wasn’t the normal sequence of events was Candiace’s husband, Chris Bassett. But then every woman’s labor is a personal journey, and Candiace’s required hair and makeup.
“Chris was just sitting there looking at me like, ‘This chick is so bougie,'” the former pageant queen adds. “He was just shaking his head. But make no mistake, if I could have had glam in there, I would have! It had to be this way.”
After having been induced days earlier, Candiace welcomed her son at 1:14 in the morning.
“Delivery was easy,” she says. “It really was two and a half, three pushes. That’s it.”
Candiace’s doula had a “cryangle” folded and ready
Candiace describes the moment her baby was placed on her chest as “magical.”
“I just couldn’t believe he was finally here,” the Drive Back singer says. “I did what’s called the golden hour, where they laid him on you for one hour before they bathe him … It was really special. I’ll never forget it for the rest of my life.”
Fans of RHOP will appreciate that Candiace’s doula was prepared for her big moment and had a “cryangle” ready. “But honestly, I was so emotional,” she admits. “I don’t think I even cared about the makeup at that point. Tears were rolling down my face and I was just so in love with this little man.”
Little Jett is Candiace and Chris’ first child, though Chris has three older children from two previous relationships. Candiace left RHOP at the beginning of her pregnancy to ensure a peaceful gestation. Congratulations to Candiace and Chris on the addition to their family!
The Real Housewives of Potomac airs Sundays at 8/7c on Bravo.
