Shep Rose on Southern Charm’s ‘Dark Years’

Shep Rose is an original cast member on Southern Charm. His laid-back lifestyle and demeanor seem to complement the cast very well, though his co-stars have changed over the seasons. Some of those times he has now referred to as the “dark years.”

There is now a decade’s worth of Southern Charm to reflect on. And this year, if nothing else, has been pivotal for Shep. After BravoCon 2023, the Bravolebrity decided to cut back on his drinking. And he went to Costa Rica for a wellness retreat. Shep claimed to come back a changed man. And he brought that back for the show on Season 10.

As for seasons past, Shep took some time to reflect on notable moments in the show.

Shep Rose found early Southern Charm “collaborative” amid the “dark years”

Shep, who was cast in 2014 for the premiere season, called the early seasons “collaborative.” By the time Season 5 rolled around, things had changed. The reality TV star called that time the “dark years.”

Shep recorded an exclusive interview for Bravowith Southern Charm’s own Director of Photography, Matt Shelly. Interestingly, Matt started working on the show in Season 5.

“Those were the dark years,” Shep joked. “No, it was. Like, Season 1, 2, and probably 3 you’re like, wide-eyed, it’s collaborative, and that’s the way it should be.”

However, Season 5 also held some tender memories for Shep. He recalled trying to induce Southern Charm alum Cameran Eubanks Wimberly’s labor when she was pregnant with daughter Palmer Corinne Wimberly. He drove his former co-star down a cobblestone road in Charleston that the locals call “labor lane.”

“I love some of the early stuff, like when Cameran and I were driving on the cobblestone road to try to induce her pregnancy,” he shared. “That was very funny and sweet.”

“Getting Lil Craig,” was another favorite moment from the earlier years on Southern Charm.

Shep is grateful for the show’s success. And presumably, the Average Expectations author had some part in that success.

“I always told people, it’s like a series of outrageous, happy accidents. Something always happens, and the secret sauce to our show is that there is no secret sauce,” he explained. “It’s just like trust that someone or something’s gonna go haywire.”

To make that happen, Shep calls for “impromptu filming”. He opined, “Like is is reality TV. Let’s go, let’s film everything.”
