Why It Is Easy to Root for JT Thomas Even Though He Quit Southern Charm

There is something about JT Thomas. I can’t put my finger on it, but since his appearance in Season 9 of Southern Charm, he has me cheering him on. The modern-day gentleman has rubbed a few of his cast members the wrong way thanks to his ill-timed jokes and conspiracy theories. Even though he has officially quit the Bravo series, I still find myself wanting him to succeed in the series. Here’s why.

JT Thomas’s obsession with Taylor Ann Green

Okay, now, while some may have called JT’s made-up relationship with Taylor Ann Green stalkerish and creepy, I looked at it as cute. The man knew the type of woman he wanted to date and really went for it. Season 9 showed JT pining for Taylor. And I mean pining as in writing sonnets and professing his love for her in the most inopportune times. Yet, every single time, I hoped he would get a positive response. Even though it was like watching a bird continue to fly into a glass window, I wanted JT to have a win. Sadly, he didn’t seem to learn from his freshman season.

Season 10 is showing JT repeating some of the same mistakes. This time, his love interest is a close friend, Venita Aspen. The man doesn’t give up, and there is something to admire about that. In a world of swiping left and speed dating, JT continues to choose the hard road. He wants to fall in love the old-fashioned way by making a true connection. Even though I know JT is not going to win over Venita’s heart, I still find myself tuning in each episode, hoping Cupid’s arrow has hit his mark.

JT Thomas is actually funny

How can you not root for someone who genuinely comes up with some of the best conspiracy theories? Shortly before the premiere of Season 10, JT announced that he would be leaving the series. And now that Southern Charm is airing, I think I see why. It very much feels like the cast has turned against him due to some of his outlandish theories about his friends.  Just in the last episode alone, JT confided in Craig Conover and Shep Rose that he felt Madison LeCroy’s husband thought he and his wife had hooked up. The thought process was asinine but hilarious nonetheless.

JT then questioned if Madison and Austen Kroll were secretly rekindling their relationship. However, the only evidence he had was the simple fact that both wore polka dots for the Carolina Cup. I mean, the delusion runs deep with this one. And let’s not forget the fact that JT thought it was a brilliant idea/joke to gift Patricia Altschul a cane. The woman, who is 83, did not find that gesture remotely entertaining. But watching him handwrite a note and spell check it was pretty entertaining. JT isn’t afraid to laugh at himself, which is a nice reprieve from the other cast members, who are taking their sewing business a bit too seriously.

I wish JT Thomas had stuck this season out

I think what makes me root for JT the most is that he likes to shake up the status quo. He isn’t like the others. Yes, he was born into wealth like much of the cast, but he seems to be a hard worker. The man didn’t rest on his laurels and founded The Inns, which is the largest Airbnb company in Charleston. Even though I am sure the comments will be flooded with opposition from trolls, JT is a gentleman. He seemingly respects most of his cast members and stands up for the little guy, especially if the little guy is him.

Yes, JT can be annoying. And yes, JT can come across as thirsty. But there is something about him that has me continuously rooting for him to come out on top. I don’t always have the best track record when it comes to picking a fan favorite but I feel like JT got bamboozled out of a solid stance on Southern Charm. Personally, I don’t think the other guys in the group appreciated how outspoken he was as the newbie. Let’s be honest. It made them look dumb. So, sadly, my number one draft choice decided to shut up instead of put up. But just so you know, JT, I have always been rooting for you.

You can watch Southern Charm on Thursdays on Bravo.
