When the Real Housewives of Potomac first aired in 2016, Karen Huger and Gizelle Bryant were major frenemies. Even though they claimed to be long-time buddies, the way they treated one another really screamed, “I hate you.” It was clear they had a complex friendship that can easily be described as a love-hate relationship or best-frenemy dynamic.

As Real Housewives of Potomac fans are aware, their arguments have been a core part of the series. One of their biggest feuds occurred during Season 4 when they had a rumble in the hotel lobby. Karen felt set up by a few comments, but Gizelle denied trying to hurt her friend. Season 1 also showed Karen being shady as she handed over an etiquette book, implying that Gizelle had no manners. Karen summed up their relationship perfectly, noting, “I don’t have a problem with Gizelle. I actually like her. She’s just irritating.”
But with every fight, there is always a resolution. Even though their friendship is fragile, as it can go from okay to “Oh no” in the blink of an eye, the women don’t often hold onto their grudges. Gizelle and Karen’s rivalry has been the most enduring. As a longtime fan, it has been interesting to try and figure out how they managed to achieve something past Bravo housewives couldn’t, which was feud without poisoning their dynamic.

During the Season 9 premiere, Gizelle showed major support for Karen after her DUI. She told the cameras, “Karen and I have been friends for a long time. I care about her. I love her. I’m going to be there for her for whatever she needs.” During the same episode, Gizelle even joked, “I can’t have nothing happen to Karen —who am I gonna yell at?” Their relationship is sisterly, which often helps describe their turbulent interactions. But it is all about love for these two. Gizelle continued sharing with Karen, “I want to make sure that you’re happy because I think we need to have, like, a real conversation. Let me start off by saying once I saw that you were in an accident, I couldn’t imagine something really happening to you. And it just shook me.”
Watching these two matriarchs come together and understand one another’s emotions is moving. Sometimes, it is just nice to put the fussing and feuding aside to show another layer to their relationship. Both these women know that it’s not all about the fighting but more about showing that while they disagree, they can unite for a greater cause.

It warms my heart to see these two get along since they knew each other well before joining The Real Housewives of Potomac. The pair have been acquainted for over a decade, having run into the same social circles. It always bodes well when Bravo casts women who knew one another before the show. And their true understanding of one another often shines through. I would argue that these two are the pillars of the Real Housewives of Potomac.
Gizelle is drop-dead gorgeous and a perfect representative for the Bravo network. And Karen was made for reality TV thanks to her charismatic and quick-witted energy. It’s no wonder fans love seeing these two get along because they become the perfect Real Housewives star when they combine their superpowers. Without knowing, both women are forced to keep one another in check. The mother of three can be messy, but the Grand Dame is always close by to call her out. These two Real Housewives of Potomac stars are the clear leaders of the group, and their dynamic is what makes the show so great. So when they can figure it out and get along, everyone enjoys the episodes a bit more than usual. Watching a true friendship play out on TV is great because, in the end, we end up rooting for them to succeed.
