We love drama and feuds, and Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Season 5 has that all over the place. There have been so many memorable fights, from “high body count hair” to “You wanna meet the healed Whitney?” to Meredith Marks telling people to leave. But we also love to watch these shows for the genuine moments of friendship that warm our hearts. In Season 5, no duo brings that more than Mary Cosby and Angie Katsanevas.

Because this cast is very good at keeping details under wraps, we didn’t expect this new friendship. But it’s been an absolute delight all season long. In a year when RHOSLC is firing on all cylinders, Mary and Angie are responsible for so many of this season’s iconic moments. Here are a few reasons we love watching this friendship blossom.

How did Mary Cosby and Angie Katsanevas become friends?

Because she missed Season 3, Mary didn’t interact with Angie much until she returned as a “friend of” in Season 4. And they didn’t hit it off right away. When Angie invited Mary to sit with her and Whitney Rose, Mary said “Please stop talking to me like that.” In a confessional, she asked, “Who is Angie??”

Mary’s opinion of Angie seemed to follow the viewers’ who also warmed to her over time. At the Season 4 reunion, Angie informed Mary she had lipstick on her teeth. Soon after, Mary surprised the group by admitting she actually did like Angie (which was a high honor, because Mary only liked two other RHOSLC cast members).

After attending Kathy Hilton’s Christmas party together, they became besties. By the time Season 5 began filming about two months later, Mary and Angie were attached at the hip. From the premiere alone, we were hooked on this new duo.

Mary and Angie are RHOSLC’s dynamic comedy duo

Luann and Sonja, Frick and Frack, and now, Mary and Angie. They’re the new favorite Real Housewives comedy team. I would watch a spin-off of these two. Maybe another installment of Welcome to Crappie Lake? Honestly, I would watch them read the phone book.

Mary and Angie are hilarious on their own. Their taglines prove it. But together, they’re pure comedy gold. Think of Angie unfurling her scroll, and then Mary describing the involved process of making it, adding, “She has a lot of time on her hands…probably too much time.”

One scene of them going to a dance class (while wearing matching sunglasses) is funnier than most comedies. Especially when Mary said Angie’s car smelled like onions, and they started arguing over whether or not Angie had any. You can never predict what these two will say, but their interactions are always entertaining.

Mary is much more engaged in Season 5 thanks to her friendship with Angie

It was just last season that Mary chose eating McDonald’s in a Sprinter van over hanging out with the others in Palm Springs. This season, however, she’s much more engaged with the whole cast. I never thought Mary could be so happy to see Whitney! I also never thought I’d see her having so much fun at a dance class with one of Heather Gay’s daughters. Or drinking Miller beer…

There’s a vast difference between her behavior in past group outings and now. Just look at her joyful dancing with Angie at the Milwaukee basketball game or their adventure at the bobblehead museum. In one episode where Mary went to a group event without Angie, it also helped that Heather’s hangout had a zip line. Turns out, Mary is a total zip line enthusiast, the epitome of that I Think You Should Leave sketch (iykyk). But this new friendship is why she’s having so much more fun this season.

Mary and Angie shared a vulnerable moment about addiction

This friendship doesn’t just make me laugh. Mary and Angie also share moments that make people cry.

Earlier in the season, Angie vulnerably spoke about her complicated feelings towards her late mother. Her mother’s alcoholism prevented her from being present in Angie’s life. She tearfully shared with her dad that she doesn’t want to be angry with her mother anymore. It was a powerful scene that emphasized why Angie earned her center snowflake this year.

Mary also gave us one of the show’s most emotional scenes when her son Robert Jr. opened up about his addiction. Emphasizing how close they’ve become, Angie was the first person in the cast Mary confided in. And she knew exactly what to say from her own experience, and how to assure Mary that none of this was her fault. Being able to talk about their shared experience further solidified their bond. And it makes this writer tear up just to think about it.

Mary and Angie’s reunion in Mexico made me cry

While the cast headed to Puerto Vallarta, Mary stayed behind an extra day to take her son to rehab. But Angie was the only one she told. It made their reunion even more emotional. Angie was so happy to see her friend, you’d think they were apart for years instead of days.

“Angie is a positive person for me right now,” a tearful Mary said in a confessional. “Her spirit, her energy, it’s just positive, and it’s making me feel like everything’s gonna be okay.” She continued, “I’m going through this but there’s someone in this with me. She’s got me, and I’ve got her.” I’m not crying, you are!

Real Housewives of Salt Lake City returns January 8 on Bravo.
