I didn’t think at the ripe old age of 40+ that talent and viewers would need a crash course on how to be a good friend. But here I am, watching the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, scratching my head and agreeing with Dorit Kemsley. I know, hell hath indeed frozen over. I knew things would get messy with the demise of Dorit and Kyle Richards’ friendship, but I never dreamed that both women would forget to honor the girl code.
Lesson 1. Don’t send memes to your friend’s ex
When it comes to a breakup, it is imperative that women stick together. However, Kyle has seemingly missed that memo. During the most recent episode of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, she and Dorit became embroiled in a screaming match over, you guessed it, an online joke. It came to light while the ladies were gathered at the Viper Room that Kyle has continued to interact with PK Kemsley despite the music manager’s silent treatment towards his wife. The wall between the two women fell like “Dominoes” as Erika Jayne released her aptly entitled new single.
I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole on this one. When I was in college, I took a Feminism 101 course where my professor noted that it is impossible to have a platonic relationship with the opposite sex. I was baffled because I had guy friends who I wasn’t attracted to. But then I recalled the five-day crush in tenth grade and thought, “Oh sh*t. She’s right.” Kyle and PK sending memes could be harmless, or it could hint at one or both having deeper feelings. If I were Dorit, I would be wary of what their friendship truly represents.
Lesson 2: Don’t claim to be a girl’s girl like Kyle Richards
I was flabbergasted when Kyle dared to claim she was still very much a girl’s girl. Honestly, I’m not even sure most of us know the actual definition anymore since the term has become so muddied. The idea that Kyle still would claim chick before d*cks was comical, but she might have had a point. During their argument, she pointed out to Dorit that they were estranged and she didn’t owe the mother-of-two an explanation. First off, that statement sent a chill down my spine and is a serious red flag.
We’ve all had that one friend who goes through life making up rules that suit them. Let me tell ya, Dorit, Kyle isn’t your friend. If Kyle had an ounce of respect for Dorit, she wouldn’t have risked it all over a meme. Honestly, I want to see PK’s memes because they must be pretty damn funny. This season shows Kyle might not know how to be a supportive friend. The cherry on top was Kyle’s confessional claiming PK has been a way better friend than Dorit. If those aren’t fighting words I don’t know what is.
Lesson 3: The RHOBH ladies should steer clear of upsetting the divorcee
To say that Dorit has been activated is an understatement. The fashionista is taking a no-prisoner approach to dealing with her costars and I’m here for it. Now, could Dorit be a bit more demure, and mindful? God, yes. But a part of me understands where she is coming from. She is dealing with a separation on national TV. Just like Dorit, I would have expected my friends to rally around me. Dorit is mad and is taking out her anger on anyone who crosses her. I’m shocked Camille Grammer is still standing to tell the story of being called a “c*nt” multiple times during Kyle’s party.
I am surprised that more of the women haven’t stepped up. Erika, of all people, is the one who shows the most grace to her friend. She sits and listens as Dorit word vomits her fears and anxieties on her. That is a good friend. It’s a big reason why I am forgiving her lack of singing at her single release. Anyone can see that Dorit is hurting. So, for Kyle to still choose violence when she has been going through the same issues is a great example of how not to be a good friend. So, ladies of the 90210 do better because one day, it could be in Dorit’s shoes.
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is available to stream on Peacock.
