Mary Cosby took keeping it real to the next level on Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Season 5. Not only was she more engaged with the ladies, but Mary had one of the most raw family storylines in Real Housewives history involving her son Robert Cosby Jr.
Fans will never forget the scene when Robert Jr. confessed the extent of his addiction and mental health struggles to his mother. Mary was open and supportive, intending to remind her son how loved he was. Robert Jr. also didn’t hold back and told Mary everything he had been dealing with. Now, Mary is talking about what it was like filming such an intense moment and anticipating it to air on a national TV show.
Mary Cosby doesn’t regret staying real
In a recent interview with TODAY, Mary admitted that it wasn’t easy to let the RHOSLC crew capture the moment with Robert Jr. “It’s a fine line between putting your kids out there and then protecting them,” she said. “It was just something that I questioned all the way up until it aired.”
Mary was unsure of how the RHOSLC audience would react to the sit down with Robert Jr. “When it was received in such a positive light, people responded (with) love and it touched them. … I couldn’t have been more satisfied,” Mary said. She added that it’s the “best thing” her family has done.
Later, Mary elaborated that neither she nor her son knew exactly what would happen at that moment. She told him before filming that they’d be having a talk in front of the cameras and she wanted him to be honest. “I just didn’t see all that coming,” she said. “What came out of him was real, and what came out of me was real. And I think that’s why it went across so good because we weren’t doing it for any sole reason. We were doing it because that’s our relationship.” I have nothing but praise for Mary’s approach to Robert Jr.’s struggles. We wish Robert Jr. the best on his recovery journey.
